이 연구는 특수교육 분야에서 활발히 진행되어 장애아동 및 장애를 지닌 성인들에게 널리 적용되고 있는 자기결정 이론과 모형에 대한 이론적 탐색에 관한 것이다. 여러 가지 자기결정 이론들 가운데 교육적으로 중요한 의미가 있다고 여겨지는 세 가지 이론(Deci와 Ryan, 1985; Wehmeyer, 1996; Abery & Stancliffe, 1996)들을 중심으로 탐구하였다. 연구 목적은 내재적 동기 이론들에 기반을 두어 발전해 온 여러 심리학적 개념들과 위의 세 가지 자기결정 이론들이 어떠한 연관성을 가지며 발전되어 왔는지 살펴보고, 이러한 지식을 장애아동 교육에 효과적으로 활용해 보려는데 있다. 구체적 연구 절차는 다음의 과정에 따라 이루어졌다. 첫째, 세 가지 자기결정 이론들의 형성에 영향을 끼친 기대-가치 이론, 귀인이론, 자기효능감 이론에 대해 검토하였다. 둘째, 초기 자기결정이론(Deci와 Ryan, 1985)을 구성하는 4가지 하위 이론들의 상호 연관성을 살펴보았다. 셋째, 여러 자기결정 모형들 중 현재 널리 활용되고 있는 기능주의적 모형과 우리나라에 비교적 덜 알려져 있지만 점차 중요성을 더 해 가고 있는 생태학적 모형을 개념, 구조, 구성요소를 살펴보고, 장애아동에게 갖는 교육적 함의를 논의하였다. 넷째, 비장애 아동들의 긍정적인 태도와 인식이 장애아동 동기 형성에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 중요 환경 요인들 가운데 하나임을 발견하고 장애아동을 위한 효과적인 환경 지원을 강조하였다.

The purpose of this study was to provide the resources of a psychological background to the self-determination theories applied to children and adults who have disabilities in the realm of special education. The three theories (Deci & Ryan, 1985; Wehmeyer, 1996; Abery & Stancliffe) are concerned primarily with exploring and discussing the psychological constructs as they relate to internal motivation for individuals with disabilities. This study examined the theories of expectancy-value, attribution, self-efficacy as the psychological background to the self-determination theories. The four mini theories of self-determination proposed by Deci & Ryan(1985) were reviewed. Comparisons among the two self-determination models, the functional and ecological models developed by each of Wehmeyer(1996) and Abery & Stancliffe(1996) were made in its definition, structure, components, and the implication for teaching of students with disabilities. Positive perception and attitudes of others as well as self were identified as influencing capitals in enhancing self-determination for the individuals. Implications for teaching the children were discussed.
