Most widely read books in Korea today are either those for leisure and scintillatinginterest or those practical manuals for entrance and official examinations, while those classical works emphasizing character formation and liberal education are neglected. In view of the above fact, we are of the opinion that more classics written by great authors in both East and West, past and present should be read for the promotion of liberal education. We believe translation into readable modern Korean and publication of selected classics recommendable for Korean youths, especially for college students, must precede to any hasty "spoon-feeding" indoctrination of liberal ideas. As a first step we have attempted to provide a reliable guideline for the selection of classics suitable to college students in modern Korea. We have agreed upon one of the most basic criteria for the selection: most precious books for Korean college students are those that would give them "power of wisdom" living in this modern world. Accordingly, we have selected some books among the Korean, Chinese, Indian and Western classics which are obligatory and prerequisite readings for any Korean student today.
