This is a preliminary attempt to probe the problem of what among the Chinese books can be ranked as "Classics" for basic readings suitable to Korean students today.I have surveyed those Chinese books readily available in Korea translated into Korean and published on Korean in order to ascertain what books are favorably received by Koreans. Then I have carefully considered "Hundered Selections among Chinese Classics" published by Shin-dong-a monthly magazine as a special separate volume added to January, 1980 edition and some other basic texts of Sinology selected by Chinese scholars. On the basic of the survey and consideration, I have selected important Chinese classic most appropriate for us and classified them into literature, thought and social ideas. I have consistently kept the principle of selection, i.e., from the viewpoint of Korean culture and education. Furthermore I have emphasized more on the futuristic significance on Korean culture and educating Korean youths than on their past influence on us.Finally, I have dealt with the problem of translation and introduction of those works selected. General problematics are considered first and specific idiosyncracies of each particular book are probed in turn.
