The idea that liberal education is the education that everybody ought to have, and that the best way to a liberal education is through the greatest works men have produced, is still the best educational idea: These books shed some light on all our basic problems, and that is folly to do without any light we can get. But with economic growth, liberal education has tended to be neglected all over the world. In Korea, because of the tremendous premium she has been placing on the need for rapid economic growth, it is more neglected than in any other country. We might even say that liberal education has virtually disappeared in our country. We regard this disappearance as an aberration, and not as an indication of progress. nnre do not look upon this disappearance as a benefit to be thankful for, but as an error that should be corrected. This paper emphasizes the need to recapture and re-emphasize and bring to bear upon its present problems the wisdom that lies in the works of the greatest thinkers. They may help us to learn to live better.I tried to choose the mose important voices in the classics of the West for Korean students. which would be particularly beneficial to them.
