This study is a part of a larger project to investigate scholarly publications of the Chosun period. In this study, the author aimed at investigating those books related to philosophical discussions during the Chosun period. In this paper, the author tried to answer the following questions in detail: (1) what kinds of publication were brought forth, (2) in what particular reign the publication activity was at its height, and (3) what kind of ideological main stream we can find from it. In this study, the author put more than 390 kinds of publication published during the Chosun period under investigation. These were classified into several groups in terms of publication period, ideological trend, and field. They include; Confucian classics and annotations belonging to the Chu Hsi School, pedagogical writings, Taoist cannons and other scholarly writings attributed to pre-Chin scholars rather than Confucian scholars, military strategies and mannuals, ete. The investigation produced a conclusion that reaffirmed the traditional evaluation on scholarly achievements during the Chosun period; that the Chosun period was a high time of the Confucian scholarship, particularly the scholarship of Chu Hsi School. This is backed up by the fact that almost 90% of the entire publication throughout the Chosun period belong to those of Confucian background related to scholarly thought of Chu Hsi. It is noteworthy that books on Yang-ming School, which attracted a great number of followers after the collapse of Ming dynasty in China, took a very small portion in Korean scholarship. Even though there were some scattered publications of other natures than Confucian scholarship, it was evident that the Chu Hsi`s thought took the position of the most influential stream in the minds of Korean scholars during the Chosun period. Among the various reigns during the Chosun period, that of King Sejong was the period when a majority of publication came into being. Among the books published during King Sejong`s reign were the encyclopaedic anthology of Confucian classics and the anthology of Chu Hsi`s philosophical theory. These two items became the most influential publications for later scholars who regarded them as the core of their scholarship. In this sense, no one can deny the influential role King Sejong played in philosophical sophistication that took place during the later years of Chosun period.
