Kim Si-sup is the authoi of Kumo Sinhwa, a collection of fictional works, which is known to be the first of its kind iii the history of Korean literature. Most of scholarly researches have so fai been concentiated on this woik, and the cntics have paid specific attention to his ideas manifested in these collected tales. This papei was written on the assumption that any ieseaich on Kim Si-sup can``t he satisfactory if the ieseaichei ignoies the significance of the two thousand two hundred poems collected in his complete work. Keeping in mind the fact that Kim Si-sup foimed a unique world of his own in the histoiy of Koiean poetiy, the piesent wnter attempts to open a new field in the Kim Si-sup studies. A horn poet, Kim Si-sup made his name known to the world at the juvenile stage of his literaIy career. When he realized that his political ambition had been ruthlessly frustrated aftei the coup d``&at by King Sejo, he tuined his hack to the world to seek pleasore in wandering and poetic composition. As he had nothing to do hut writing peoms, poetiy meant everything to him. To him in a ceitain sense the act of writing poems was in itself poetry. Poetiy was the only channel available to him through which he could speak ahout himself and the world. In othei woi ds, poetry was the only means by which he could realize himself The paper discusses Kim Si-s?frs life and woik through an elaborate study of his poems, with specific refeiences to his peculiai mode of thinking and feeling in the poetic diction and to such recuiimg themes as nature, time, history, leisure, and nostalgia. The present writer also made a new approach to Kumo Sin Jiwa by regarding these collected tales as a woik of ait thiough which Kim Si-sup attempted to realize his idea of love.
