1763년 제11차 계미사행의 서기 원중거가 저술한 『화국지』 는 그의 체험을 바탕으로 하여 일본에 관한 총체적 정보와 자료를 담고있다. 『화국지』 에 기술된 원중거의 일본 체험은 l8세기 후반 조선 선비의 사고와 사각을 드러내고 있는 바 본고에서는 그 의의와 한계를 고찰하였다. 의의있는 점은 새롭게 본 일본과 일본인에 관한 내용이다. 원중거는 대마도인과 내지인을 엄격하게 구별하면서 일본인에 대한 기존의 부정적 인식을 완화시키고 있다. 또한 일본의 우수한 기술문화와 文風이 홍기하는 변모상을 들어 일본을 더 이상 오랑캐로 야만시해선 안된다고 주장하였다. 조선보다 앞선 산업기술을 보유하여 물질문화가 발달한 나라 일본이,文風의 흥기로 말미암아 문명의 나라로 점점 성장해가는 면모를 바람직한 현상으로 파악한 것이다. 그러나 이러한 일본 바로알기에는 심각한 한계점을 드러내고 있다. 일본이 長기를 통해 아란타로부터 서양문물을 수입하여 국제화의 싹을 키우고 있는 상황에서, 원중거는 한중일 삼국의 유교문화권에 고착되어 서양세계에 대한 관심의 결여와 일본의 진정한 변모상황을 감지하지 못하는 한계를 드러내었다. 또한 일본의 儒學에 대한 진지한 탐구가 결여되어 있어서 성리학 일변도의 조선 선비 의 한계성이 드러나 있다. 『화국지』 에 기술된 원중거의 일본 체험은 使行 이 갖는 여건상의 한계로 말미암아 보다 깊이있는 탐구를 하지 못한 점이 있다. 『화국지』가 미래를 위한 것이면서 또한 미래지향적 전망이 부족한 데서 당시 조선이 놓여 있었던 국제적 위상을 읽을 수 있다.
