CEDA 방식 토론은 미리 정해둔 절차에 따라 듣기와 말하기가 교차하면서 역동적으로 진행하는 구조를 취하고 있기 때문에, 화자와 청자가 서로 타협하면서 의미를 창조해 가는 상호 교섭성을 충실히 반영하고 있다. 필자는 CEDA 방식 토론과 형식과 내용을 위한 교수·학습 모형으로 ``마이크로 토론(Micro Debate)``과 ``매크로 토론(Macro Debate)이라는 방법론을 구안하였다. 마이크로 토론은 CEDA 방식 토론의 각 단계를 10분 내외로 축소하여 토론의 절차를 습득하게 하는 것이며, 매크로 토론은 텍스트를 매개로 하는 한국형 논쟁 문화를 미국의 CEDA 방식 토론과 접목한 것이다. 본 연구에서 제안한 매크로 토론은 이황과 기대승이 8년간 9통의 편지를 주고받으며 펼쳤던 사단칠정논쟁과 같은 방식의 텍스트 기반 토론으로 이른바 ``마라톤(marathon) 토론``이다. 마이크로 토론(Micro debate)이 토론의 절차를 익히기 위해 실제 토론을 축소한 것이라면, 매크로 토론(Macro debate)은 토론의 논증 구조를 익히기 위해 실제 토론을 텍스트를 기반으로 확대한 것이다. 본 연구의 의의는 CEDA 방식 토론의 논증 수준을 높여 토론의 질을 높일 수 있는 구체적인 학습 모형을 제시하고 그 효과를 검증했다는 데 있다.

In the CEDA(Cross Examination Debate Association) debating model, students make active use of listening and writing skills in accordance with the procedures. The listeners and the speakers reach a compromise and create a meaning through the debating model. I have designed the ``Micro Debate`` and the ``Macro Debate`` method as the teaching and learning methodology of the CEDA debating model. The Micro Debate model let students learn the procedures of debate from the curtailed CEDA debating model where each step is reduced to 10 minutes. The Macro Debate model is combination of the CEDA model and the text based debate that Koreans prefer. This study suggests the Macro Debate which is based on what is called ``marathon discussion`` of Lee Hwang and Lee Yee of Chosun Dynasty. They wrote 9 letters of debate to each other for 8 years. In the Micro Debate, the real debate is reduced to show the procedures of discussion. On the other hand, the Macro Debate is an extended form which is based on text. It is designed for students to learn the basic principles of argumentation and refutation. This study is significant because it represents a specific learning model for acquiring high level argumentation method of the CEDA, confirming the effectiveness of it.
