이 연구는 대학생 토론 지도 사례를 중심으로 토론 교육의 내용과 방법을 살펴보았다. 토론 지도 과정을 순차적으로 제시하면서 학생들이 토론 과정에서 겪는 어려움이나 문제점을 살펴본 후 각각의 개선 방향에 대해서 살펴보았다. 토론은 민주 시민으로서 갖추어야 할 요소인 비판적 의사 결정 방법과 합리적 의사소통 방법을 습득할 수 있는 가장 종합적이고 효율적인 대화 방식이다. 하지만 60명 가까운 학생들과 토론 수업을 진행해야 하는 상황에서 원하는 토론 교육의 효과를 얻는 것은 쉽지 않다. 주로 모둠 별 토론을 진행하게 되는데 이 모둠 활동이 주로 소수에 의해 주도되고 나머지는 소극적으로 대충 때우려 하는 경향이 있기 때문이다. 훌륭한 토론을 하기 위해서는 자기주장의 옳고 그름에 대해 이유를 들어 밝힐 줄 알아야 하고 그러기 위해서는 자기주장을 뒷받침할 수 있는 설득력 있는 논거를 제시할 수 있어야 한다. 그런데 학생 가운데는 발표 자료를 충분히 조사하지도 논제에 대해 깊이 있게 생각하지도 않은 채 시간 안에 발표만 끝내려고 하는 경향이 있다. 이런 학생들의 강의에 임하는 태도는 소속 학과나 성별, 연령, 관심 분야에 따라 다르다. 따라서 강의의 주도권이 교수에게 있음에도 불구하고 교수는 학생의 입장에서 끊임없이 학생의 의견을 듣고 학생 현재의 생각과 느낌을 파악하여 적절한 교육적 장치를 취하면서 강의를 진행해 나가야 한다. 그리고 학생들의 학습 동기를 유발하기 위한 방법을 꾸준히 탐구하고 개발해야 한다.

This study looks for the most effective way to achieve the purpose of debate education of university students. It examines troubles students have in debate by questioning survey, after which it searches respective problems and improvements. The ways and contents of debate education are divided into preparation, debate and evaluation. Debate education is appropriate to develop comprehensive and creative thinking skills. To acquire qualifications one needs to be a citizen, debate is the most overall and effective way to have a conversation. It is difficult, however, to expect respectful result of debate education in the class where almost 60 students are belonging to. Usually, there are group discussions. The problem is that a few participating the debate while the rest merely doss about. Students have to know the way to justify whether their opinions contain proper reasons. They should be able to represent the convincing grounds for their arguments. Many, however, tend not to research or think about the topic and only want to finish presenting their views in given time. The attitude of these students attending this class can be different according to major, sex, age and what they are interested in. Even though a professor leads the lecture, (s)he has to listen to students continuously, be equipped with suitable educational strategy responding to their opinions and study and develop means of motivating students to learn consistently.
