본 연구에서는, Lakoff(1975)가 지적한 대로 여성이 부드럽고 완곡한 표현을 사용하여 상대방의 동의를 구하는 방식으로 실제로 발화하는 경향이 있는지, 질문이 성별에 따라 어떤 다른 특징을 갖는지에 대해서 알아보기 위한 것이다. 연구를 위해 세종 구어 원시 코퍼스 중 남성간의, 여성간의 2인 대화 약 9만 어절을 추출하여 설명형 질문, 판정형 질문, 확인형 질문과 보상, 어사, 말중복현상의 남녀간의 사용 차이를 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 의문형 어조의 발화는 여성이 약 1.5배가량, 설명형 질문의 경우는 남성이, 판정형 질문의 경우는 여성이 더 많이 사용하였다. 보상의 빈도를 보면, 남성보다 여성이 "진짜? 진짜야? 정말? 그래? 그치? 근데? 그러게? 그러네?" 등을 더 많이 발화함으로써 화자와 청자간의 상호작용과 대화를 진행하는데 더 적극적임을 알 수 있었다. 또한 부가의문문의 사용 정도와 맞장구로 쓰이는 어사, 반복하여 되묻는 질문의 사용은 남성이 좀 더 많아서, 남성간의 대화시 상호간의 호응이 좀 더 활발함을 알 수 있었다. q의문형 교환 구조의 경우 여성이 ``연쇄구조``의 사용이 좀 더 많아 여성이 재질문하여 선행 발화를 보충 설명하며 이끌어가는 경향을 갖고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 결과는 질문형의 타입에 따라 남녀의 의문형 사용 양상이 다름을 확인했다는데 의의가 있다.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether gender influences the choice of question types as Lakoff (1975) originally proposed. According to Lakoff, women tend to use tag-questions more frequently than men, in order to seek for their interlocutor`s agreement. We have retrieved 90,000 words from Sejong Spoken Raw Corpus and categorized them into two groups - i.e. conversations between men and between women. And then, we have sorted them out by the following question types: identification question, polarity question, confirmation question, repair and backchannel. The results show that women used information and polarity questions 50% more than men. The reverse holds of indentification questions; that is, men used them more frequently. As for repair and backchannel, more frequency has been found in men`s conversations, indicating that men seem to be more engaged in conversations between interlocutors. In questioning exchanges, women used ``chaining`` more. It seems that they tend to question their interlocutor`s previous statements and make up for any information gap between interlocutors.
