The middle construction is deeply cognitively motivated, which essence can only be captured from cognitive approach. Such a cognitive definition of middles will help us have an overall picture of middles and their syntactic and semantic features. This paper compares English and Chinese middle construction from cognitive perspectives and discusses their similarities and differences. It concludes that both English and Chinese middle construction have the typical properties of the construction in common. And Chinese middle construction has own its unique cognitive properties due to special syntactic and semantic rules of ``hao+V`` construction. In ``hao+V`` construction, auxiliary ``hao`` is caused by the syntactic operation of extrapositon and tough movement, and lexicalization of the construction of ``hao+V`` is still in its progress. Moreover, ``NP+V+qilai+ADJ`` construction, patient-passive construction and ergative construction in Chinese, is also viewed as offering another cognitive mechanism in the result of the construal of scenes in the world, so they cannot be considered as middle construction.
