이 글의 목표는 민족개념의 고수냐 해체냐의 이분법적 선택이 아니라, 민족개념의 외연을 새롭게 정립하려는 입장에서 민족개념을 성찰하는 데 있다. 그 핵심적 내용은 한 마디로 요약하면 민족개념을 동질성과 이질성 대신 공통성과 차이의 범주로 이해해야 한다는 것이다. 이를 위해 이 글은 종족적 정체성을 논의의 출발점으로 삼았다. 왜냐 하면 20세기의 한반도 역사에서 비롯된 종족 정체성의 다양한 변용들은 단일 정체성으로 통합해야 할 정체성의 분열상태가 아니라, 오히려 새로운 민족 개념을 사유하는 조건으로 이해했기 때문이다. 이는 종족성과 정치공동체가 한 번도 일치해 본적이 없는 20세기 한반도의 역사를 염두에 두면서 다양한 정치공동체에 속한 사람들이 서로 결합되는 실질적이고 구체적인 경로에 대한 사유를 요구한다. 이 경로는 사상이념뿐만 아니라 생활문화가 차이가 나는 이들이 서로 접촉하는 과정에서 갈등하고 공명하는 실천적 과정을 동반할 수밖에 없다. 민족공통성은 이러한 생활문화적 정서의 공통성을 확대하려는 문제의식에서 제기된 개념이다.

The purpose of this paper is to reflect the concept of nation from the perspective newly formulating its extension, not from the dichotomy of dismantling or adherence it. To summarize briefly, the key claims of this paper is that the concept of nation should be understood as the category of commonality and difference, instead of the category of homogeneity and heterogeneity. To explain it, this paper made the ethnic identity as a starting point for its discussion. Because, various transformations of the ethnic identity derived from the history of Korean peninsula in the 20th century, are not the division of identity integrated into a single identity, rather the conditions to think about the new concept of nation. Keeping in mind that Korean ethnicity and its political community have never seen a match once in the history of Korean peninsula in the 20th century, there is a need to think about the practical and concrete paths which Korean ethnic groups belonging to various political community have been combined with each other. As Korean ethnic groups are different from in ideological principles and the style of life and culture, in the course of their contact with each other, this paths are bound to accompany the practical process of conflict or sympathy. The concept of national commonality is raised in the awareness of the problem in trying to expand emotional commonality of life and culture between Korean ethnic groups.
