본 연구는 독해전략 중 SQ3R을 통하여 경도 정신자체학생의 독해력 향상과 자기결정력에 미치는 효과를 알아보고자 하였다. 중학교 특수학급에 재학중인 3명의 경도 정신지체학생을 대상으로 SQ3R 독해전략을 적용하여 독해력 향상과 훈련절차를 익히는 중에 자기결정력 향상에 미치는 효과를 검증하였다. 그 결과 독해력은 중재 기간의 점수는 기초선 기간에 비해 62.4%의 향상률을 보였고, 유지 기간의 점수는 기초선 기간에 비해 75.4%의 향상률을 보였다. 그리고 자기결정력은 자율성면에서 평균 사전점수에 비해 사후점수가 25.6%, 자아 실현면에서는 37.8%의 향상률을 보였다. 그러나 본 연구에서는 SQ3R 독해전략은 인지능력과 의사소통 수준이 기본적으로 보장되는 경도 정신지체학생의 능력에 더하여 독해력과 자기결정력에 변화를 가져올 수 있음을 시사하였다. 특히 SQ3R 독해전략 훈련법은 교사의 적극적인 교수법에 대한 이해와 학생들이 단계별 자율적 활용법을 익히게 하는 전략적 적용의 중요성을 또한 본 연구에서는 강조하고 있다.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the SQ3R reading strategy to improve the reading comprehension and delf-determination skills for students with mild mental retardation. Three students with mild mental retardation who were attending a special class in a middle school were participated for this study. Multiple base with subjects design was utilized for reading comprehension skill, and pre- and post-test were utilized for self-determination skill. The results of this study were that: (a) the SQ3R reading strategy was effective to improve the reading comprehension skill for students with mild mental retardation; and (b) the SQ3R reading strategy was effective to improve the self-determination skill for students with mild mental retardation. However this study suggested that the teacher had to understand the teaching method with SQ3R reading strategy, and that students allowed to learn step-by-step application. This study concluded that the SQ3R reading strategy training could help to improve the reading comprehension and self-determination skills for students with mild mental retardation in special education settings.
