이 논문은 신경림의 시집 『농무』의 공간에 대한 연구이다. 시집 『농무』의 중심 공간은 ``장터``이다. 장터는 장이 열리는 곳으로 주변의 농촌과 벽지를 연결하고, 또 이웃의 크고 작은 장터, 또는 도시와 연결된 공간이다. 이 공간은 장날이 되면 인근의 농민은 물론, 장꾼들과 광부, 노동자 등이 모여들어 한바탕 어우러지는 열린 소통의 공간이었고 축제의 공간이며 공동체적 공간이었다. 그러나 장터는 도시화, 산업화 시대를 거치면서 그 상업적 기능이 축소됨은 물론, 도시와 외부로부터 소외되고 폐쇄된 공간으로 변모한다. 『농무』의 시들은 그 폐쇄되고 닫힌 공간에 갇혀있는 사람들의 절망과 좌절, 슬픔과 분노, 혹은 그것을 벗어나기 위한, 혹은 그 속에서 견뎌내기 위한 몸부림의 기록이다. 이 시집에서 자주 등장하는 잔칫날이나, 제삿날은 장날의 한 변주이며, 광산촌이나, 공사장, 역, 도시 변두리의 시장 등도 장터의 또 다른 모습이다. 또한 주막이나 구판장, 산골 여인숙이나 봉놋방도 한데 어울려 북적대던 ``장터``의 축소된 모습이다. 그곳은 못나고 어눌하고 보잘것없는 이들이 모여 함께 부대끼며 서로의 상처를 공유하고 나누는 공간이다. 신경림은 시집 『농무』에서 이러한 공간과 그곳에 사는 사람들에 대한 애정과 깊은 신뢰를 보여주면서, 소외되고 보잘것없는 것으로 치부했던 사람들과 그들 삶의 진정성을 잘 드러내고 있다. 신경림의 시는 그런 의미에서 작고 보잘것없고, 못나고 어눌한 것들에게 보내는 애정이고 믿음이며, 그들에게 바치는 헌사다.
This study was on the space in Shin, Kyung Lim`s poetry Farm Dance. The major background space of the poems in this book is the ``marketplace.`` The marketplace links farms to nearby towns and is linked to other neighborhood marketplaces. When markets opened, this space became festive with farmers, merchants, miners, and workers from nearby neighborhoods. As a traditional space, marketplaces were an open space of communication and interaction. However, they began to lose their commercial functions and became isolated from the urban areas as a closed space through industrialization. In this respect, the poems in this book are recording the sadness, rage, or struggle of people that are confined in this closed space. The festivals and rituals that are often depicted in the poems are variations of the marketplace as well as the mines, construction sites, stations, and urban markets. The neighborhood pubs, distribution centers, and mountainous inns are also the miniature forms of the ``marketplace`` where the whole village gathered together. Shin`s Poetry Farm Dance reflects her affection and trust toward this space that can been altered and the people who live in it. It expresses the authenticity of the people who have been neglected as isolated and worthless beings, and their lives.
