한국소설사에서 성장소설은 그다지 주목을 받지 못한 편이다. 성장소설이 지극히 사소설적인 경향을 보이고 있으며, 따라서 문학의 특징인 객관적 상관물로서의 자족성을 담지하지 못하다는 해석이 그 이유이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 성장소설은 우리 삶의 커다란 변화과정을 정치하게 반영하고 있는 소설유형이라는 점은 의미가 크다. 성장소설에서 ``성장``은 ``교양``, ``형성``, ``입사``의 여러 다층적인 개념을 내포하고 있는데, 본고에서는 성장이 유년에서 성인으로 성숙해가는 변화과정이라는 제한적 의미를 극복하고 성장소설이 함의하고 있는 다의성에 주목하고자 한다. 이에 성장소설의 서술전략을 살피고, 그 의미를 해석해내고자 한다. 윤흥길의 성장소설의 세계는 병, 죽음 탐색을 통한 자기발견에 주목하고 있으며, 또한 유년화자에 내면화되어 있는 이데올로기에 주목한다. 그리고 마지막으로 반성적 자아를 통해 고백과 치유로서의 글쓰기를 시도하고 자기 주체성을 정립하고자 하는 의미를 밝힌다. 이로써 성장소설이 미성숙 상태의 체험소설에 머무르지 않고 문학적 자립성을 갖춘 유의미한 소설유형임을 밝힌다.

In the history of Korean novels, growth novels have not been spotlighted much. It is because growth novels tend to be extremely private and cannot contain the national sentimentality as objective correlative, which is a characteristic of literature. Nevertheless, it is meaningful that growth novels carefully describe the process of big changes of our lives. In growth novels, ``growth`` is a multidimensional concept implying ``general education``, ``development``, and ``employment``, and this study focused on the polysemy of growth novels to overcome the limited meaning that growth is only the process of maturation from childhood to adulthood. The purpose of this study was to discuss the narrative strategy of growth novels and interpret its meaning. First, it was clarified that Yoon, Heung Gil`s observational perspective of narrators in childhood is a strategic tool to acquire objectivity. Second, the novels` complex structure was analyzed to focus on the public discourse of young narrators. Third, the author`s intention to establish subjectivity through self-reflective ego was interpreted. Through this process, this study concluded that growth novels form an independent genre of literature, not experiential novels in immaturity.
