온라인 토론은 학습자의 학습 참여기회 확대 및 비판적, 논리적 사고력과 문제해결력을 증진시킬 수 있다는 장점에도 불구하고 글쓰기 능력이나 지원방법 등과 같은 학습자와 교수자의 미흡한 준비로 인해 긍정적인 효과를 거두지 못하는 경우가 있다. 본 연구는 온라인 토론 환경에서 논증의 과정을 구조화하여 예시를 통해 토론을 안내하는 것이 학습자의 토론 글쓰기에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 분석하고자 하였다. 연구를 위해 2010년 A 사이버대학 ``원격교육활용론`` 강좌에서 두 번의 토론을 통해 구조화된 형태로 토론 글쓰기를 안내한 경우와 그렇지 않은 경우에 토론 게시 글의 질이 얼마나 달라지는 지를 적절성, 논리성, 논거의 제시 차원에서 비교하였다. 연구 결과, 구조화된 토론 안내를 받은 집단이 그렇지 않은 집단보다 토론 평가 점수가 더 높은 것으로 나타났다. 평가의 하위 항목별로는 적절성 항목에서는 집단 간 차이가 없었으나 논리성이나 논거의 제시 부분에서는 구조화된 토론 안내를 받은 집단의 토론 평가 점수가 더 높았다. 즉, 논증의 요소를 적용하여 토론을 안내하는 것은 주제와 연관된 토론 글을 쓰는 데는 영향을 미치지 않지만 글의 논리성을 확보하거나 논거를 제시하는 데 있어서는 도움이 된다는 것을 알 수 있다. 또한, 구조화된 토론 안내가 온라인 토론에 어떠한 도움을 주었는지 알아보고자 설문을 실시한 결과, 학습자들은 논증의 요소가 반영된 토론 예시 글을 보고 미완성 예제를 통해 연습을 한 것이 토론 글의 구조나 형식을 이해하는데 도움이 되었다고 응답하였다. 또한, 체계적이고 구체적인 글쓰기에 도움이 되었다고 하였다. 이러한 결과는 온라인 토론에서 예를 통한 구조화된 토론 글쓰기 안내 및 연습이 토론 글의 질을 향상시키는데 도움이 되며, 온라인 토론에서 교수적 역할을 지원하는 토론 도구로 활용 가능함을 시사하는 것이다.

This study intended to examine the effects of guiding the discussion by providing working examples of argumentation in the online environment. The participants of an online course of university were introduced the samples of structured discussion and were compared with the others who did not have any instruction. The quality of their discussion was analyzed from three aspects: relevance, logic, and evidence. The result showed that the treatment group achieved significantly better. The two aspects of logic and evidence were especially better than the control group. This result reflected that the provision of working examples for structured discussion can effect on the increase of logic and evidence-based argumentation. The study also analyzed the participants` ideas on why they felt the guidance helpful for them. They indicated that the examples were effective because they can guide the format and methods for writing, and they were helpful for systematic and concrete writing. These results explain that the structured discussion examples can be effective to increase the quality of online discussion, and imply that it can be used as a discussion tool for supporting the teaching role of an online instructor.
