문화 번역은 서로 다른 두 문화의 차이에 대한 의미 있는 해석을 이끌어내는 행위이다. "언어를 포함하여 다수의 상징체계, 사유 양식, 서사, 매체 등 여러 차원에서 이루어지는 복합적인 문화 간 이동·횡단·소통의 방식"이 바로 문화 번역이다. 근대의 양상 또한 한 문화에서 다른 문화로 번역되면서 확산되거나 충돌을 일으킨다. 박완서의 「엄마의 말뚝 1」은 박완서 소설이 보여주는 근대 번역의 원형질을 담고 있는 작품이다. 이 소설에서는 전근대나 탈근대와 ``대립``하는 이원론적 ``번역`` 과정을 거쳐, 근대 속에 전근대와 탈근대를 ``포함``하는 일원론적 ``재번역``의 양상까지 동시에 보여주기 때문이다. 이로써 근대에 대한 박완서의 중층적이고 양가적인 근대 번역 양상을 확인할 수 있다. 박적골과 현저동으로 대변되는 시골(고향)과 도시(서울) 공간이 서로를 부정하고 배제하는 이원론적 근대에서 더 나아가, 박적골 속의 현저동, 현저동 속의 박적골이라는 혼종성의 양상에 주목하는 일원론적 근대의 차원까지 보여주고 있기 때문이다. 이 과정에서 근대는 전근대와 탈근대의 경계에서 언제나 ``환승 중``인 근대가 되고, 모든 근대에 대한 번역은 실패하게 된다. 이런 ``실패한`` 근대 번역을 통해 근대를 ``보충``하는 것이 아니라 그 ``결핍``을 드러냄으로써 오히려 지속적인 (재)번역을 가능하게 하는 것이 박완서 소설의 근대성 인식의 특징이라고 할 수 있다.

Cultural translation induces performative act, which interprets meaningful differences between two different cultures. This same phenomenon appears also in the modernity translation: they generate expansion or clash by the translation from the native to the immigrant culture. The Mother`s Stake 1 by Pak, Wan-seo contains protoplasm of modernity translation which is the prototypical aspect of her novels. The novel also provides experiences of modernity which are complex and fluid. Those experiences of modernity show two phases of cultural translations: one is dualistic translation that undergoes the modernity opposed to pre-modernity or post-modernity, and the other is monistic re-translation that embraces the pre-modernity and post-modernity into the modernity. In so doing, it is confirmed that the modernity translation of Pak is visible by plural and divided phases. Consequently, ``failed`` modernity translation exposes not the ``supplement`` of modernity but the ``deficiency`` of modernity, that is the continuous experiences of modernity offered by Pak Wan-Seo`s novel.
