이 글에서 필자는 서양 철학의 역사에서 몸에 관한 논의에 사용되었던 개념들의 차이와 유사성을 밝히고 여성의 몸에 대한 현대의 페미니즘논의들이 각각 어떠한 개념과 연관되어 있는지를 보여줌으로써 몸에 대한 논의들의 주요 갈래와 전략들을 구분해 보고자 한다. 이를 위해 필자는 무엇보다도 몸 특히 여성의 몸을 비유하는 데 사용되었던 플라톤의 코라(Chora) 개념이 물질 개념과는 상이한 이해방식을 제공한다는 점에 초점을 맞추고자 한다. 즉 플라톤에 따라 몸을 독자적힘을 갖는 코라 공간과 같은 것으로 이해하는 방식은 아리스토텔레스의 질료(hyle)나 데카르트식의 연장적 실체(res extensa) 개념에 따라 몸을수동적 물질이나 객관적 대상으로 이해할 때와는 다른 결론을 도출하게 된다는 것이다. 나아가 필자는 여성의 몸에 대한 현대 페미니즘의 논의들 역시 이에 따라 크게 두 가지로 구분될 수 있음을 보여줄 것이다. 한편으로 여성의 몸에 대한 현대적 논의들은 코라의 개념을 소환함으로써 지워진 여성의 몸과 힘을 재구성하고자 하지만 현대의 페미니즘의 다른 갈래들은 여전히 질료 혹은 연장체의 개념에 의지하여 몸을 수동적인 대상으로 파악한 후 이를 비판하거나 삭제하려는 경향을 보여준다는 것이다. 이로부터 필자는 마지막에서 몸/마음의 이분법적 사고방식을 넘어서는 방식으로 여성의 몸을 담론화하고 여성의 몸이 갖는 독자적인 힘을 삭제하지 않기 위해서는 질료나 연장체로서의 물질 개념에 의지할 것이 아니라 코라 개념의 소환이 필요하다는 주장으로 이 글을 맺고자 한다.

In this article, I fist clarify the differences of the concepts that have been used in the discussion of the Western philosophy on the body. For this I`ll focus on the concepts of ``chora`` and ``soma`` that are derived from Plato. According to Plato, woman`s body as chora has its own power, while woman`s body as soma is weak and dependent. But the concept of chora has been erased in the main history of philosophy after Plato. Aristotle introduced the concept of ``hyle`` and explained that woman`s body is like a passive material or the lack of form. And Descartes regarded body only as a passive object(res extensa) of cognitive subject. Furthermore, I`ll also show that the discussion of modern feminism on woman`s body accordingly may be divided into two parts. On the one hand, some feminists like Irigaray or Kristeva try to reconstruct the erased power of woman`s body by recalling the concept of chora. On the other hand some egalitarian feminists like de Beauvoir or Firestone understand the woman`s body as the deficient of freedom or the limited object and show the tendency to delete it. Finally I insist that we need to recall the concept of chora in order to understand the body beyond dichotomy and not to erase its own power.
