동아시아를 뒤흔든 임진왜란은 참혹한 전란 경험을 안겨주었는데, 그 과정에서 수많은 전쟁 영웅들이 만들어지기도 했다. 부산진과 동래성 함락에서는 정발과 송상현, 평양성 탈환과 진주성 함락에서는 김응서와 최경회라는 영웅이 만들어졌다. 하지만 이런 남성 영웅과 짝을 이루며 기려지는 여성들이 존재한다는 점은 흥미로운 사실이다. 애향과 금섬, 계월향과 논개가 그들이다. 하지만 義妾과 義妓로 기려지던 그들은 자신이 모시던 주인의 의연함 죽음에 감화를 받아 따라 죽었다는, 곧 남성영웅의 충절을 돋보이도록 만드는 데 불려나온 조역에 불과하다. 그리고 전란의 급박함에 몰려 쌍절암 절벽 아래 강물로 뛰어든 예천의 두 부녀자도 뒷날 烈婦로 기려지게 되었다. 하지만 이들도 그날 죽은 여러 명의 여인 가운데 남성 가족의 기록에 의해 기억되었다는 점을 유념해야 한다. 남성은 기록의 과정에서 그녀의 죽음을 가능한 한 의연하게 그리기 위해 애쓰고 있었던 것이다. 때문에 우리들은 그들 기록에서 남성 사대부에 의한 일정한 과장과 분식의 흔적을 읽어낼 수 있다. 이 논문은 이처럼 전란에서 죽은 여인이 뒷날 어떤 과정을 거쳐, 어떤 방식으로 기억되고 있는가를 <부산진순절도>, <동래부순절도>, <임진조변사적>, 동국신속삼강행실도 와 같은 텍스트를 꼼꼼하게 읽어가며 밝히고자 하였다. 그 과정에서 이들 여인은 자신의 목소리로 자기 죽음에 대해 이야기하고 있지 않다는 점에 주목했다. 無言으로 죽어간 여성의 실상과 내면을 가능한 한 다양한 자료를 세심하게 읽으며 재구해내는 것, 그리하여 그들의 비극적 죽음이 남성 사대부들에 의해 어떤 과정을 거쳐 미화되고 있는가를 폭로하는 것이 필요하다고 판단했기 때문이다. 그런 기억의 과정을 세세하게 밝히는 작업은 향후 열녀전에 대한 진전된 분석과 평등한 인간애를 향한 기초적 작업이 될 것이다.
Imjin war that shook the whole East Asia gave people horrible war experience and we got to have numerous war heroes in the process. There were heroes such as Jeong-Bal and Song Sang- Hyun in capturing Busanjin and Dongne fortress, Kim Eung-Seo and Choi Kyung-Hwe in retaking Pyeongyang Fortress and taking Jinju castle, respectively. However, there is an interesting fact that there were war heroines who were comparable to their male counterparts. They are Ae-Hyang, Keum-Seom, Gye Wol-Hyang, and Non-Gae. They were considered as faithful concubines or righteous gisengs who followed their masters` honorable deaths, which means that they only played supporting roles in order to make male heroes` loyalty stand out. Tributes have been paid to two women from Yecheon as virtuous women who threw themselves off a cliff called Ssangjeolam into the river due to urgency of war. However we should keep in mind that among several women who died this day these ladies were recorded as such by their male family members. Men attempted to write these women`s death as dignified. We could see the trace of male authors or controlling noblemen`s certain exaggeration and counterfeit of truth. This article is to read closely and clarify the death of women during the Imjin War: through what process and what method they are remembered by scrutinizing following four books, BusanJinsunjeoldo, DongneBusunjeoldo, ImjinJobyunsajeok, Dongguk Sinsok Samganghengsildo. I focused on the fact that these women did not talk about their death with their own voice. It is essential to reveal how their death were portrayed for the sake of the women who died without voice to restructure their reality and inner side by reading various materials. By doing so, we can reveal by what process their tragic deaths were glorified by male aristocrats. This work of uncovering the process of memory would be the groundwork for advanced analysis and equal humanism of "The Story of Virtuous Women" in the future.
