본고에서는 대하소설에 나타나는 ``남편 폭력담``을 살펴봄으로써, 여성몸에 가해지는 남성 폭력의 실상 및 이와 관련한 남편, 아내, 그리고 주변사람들의 태도를 종합적으로 고찰하고자 하였다. 이를 크게 ``신체 폭력담``, ``성적 폭력담``, ``언어 폭력담`` 세 가지로 나누어 살펴보았다. 먼저 ``신체 폭력담``에서는 아내를 목 베거나 아내에게 화로를 뒤집어씌우는 등의 남편의 아내에 대한 신체적 폭행이 적나라하게 드러남으로써 당대 남성의 여성에 대한 폭력의 실상을 여실히 보여주고 있었다. 그럼에도 여성을 둘러싼 시댁 혹은 친정 식구들과 함께 이러한 폭력에 대한 불만과 두려움을 공유하거나 이들과의 공모 하에 자신에게 폭력을 가한남편을 골탕 먹이는 양상이 펼쳐짐으로써 여성의 억울함을 어느 정도는 위로받거나 보상받을 수 있는 장치가 마련되고 있었다. 다음으로 ``성적 폭력담``에서는 남편이 동침을 거부하는 아내에게 부부강간을 행하거나, 자신의 성적 욕망을 방해하는 투기심 많은 아내 혹은여성 스스로의 성적 욕망을 드러내는 에너지 넘치는 아내를 무성적 존재로 만들거나 철저히 성적 세계에서 차단시키고 있었다. 더욱이 식구들이 남성인물에 공모하거나 혹은 겉으로는 남성인물을 비난하지만 속으로는 여성인물을 견제함으로써 즉 주변인들의 공조 혹은 묵인 하에서 성적 폭력은 더욱 강고해지고 있었다. 성적 폭력담을 통해서는 당대 남성들이 여성의 몸을 철저히 규제하고 관리함으로써 남성 중심적인 체제를 더욱 공고히 하는 양상을 읽어낼 수 있었다. 마지막으로 ``언어 폭력담``에서는 아내에게 ``죽어야 할 몸``이라고 단언하거나 ``실절한 몸``이라고 비꼬는 형태로 드러남으로써, 그 수위가 심각한 수준으로 전개되었다. 이러한 언어 폭력으로 인해 여주인공들은 심각한정신적 고통을 겪고 그것이 병으로 발현되어 결국 사경을 헤맬 정도의 육체적 외상(外傷)을 경험하게 된다는 점에서 여성의 몸과 관련한 남성의 언어 폭력은 여성의 몸에 이중적으로 가해지는 폭압적 행위라 할 수 있다. 다만 소설 속에서는 이렇듯 언어적으로 학대를 받는 며느리를 그시아버지나 시어머니가 끔찍하게 아끼면서 며느리의 편을 들고 있다는 점에서, 언어 폭력담은 현실과는 어느 정도 거리를 가지면서 여성들에게 위안처를 마련해주고 있었다. 요컨대, 남편 폭력담에는 여성의 몸에 대해 가해질 수 있는 남성 폭력의 다층적인 양태들을 조망하게 하면서, 현실의 고통을 잠시나마 벗어날 수 있는 위안처를 찾아보게 하는가 하면, 현실의 이념을 더욱 공고히 구축하는 전략적 기제를 들춰보게도 하는 등 다양한 의미망들이 함축되어 있었다.

This thesis examined husbands` violence narratives of conjugal relations in river novels and intended to study the real aspects of men`s violence on women`s body and the attitudes of the persons concerned as husbands, wives and so on. These violences can be devided into three parts, ``physical violence narrative``, ``sexual violence narrative`` and ``verbal violence narrative``. In ``physical violence narrative`` husbands` violence on wives` body reveal in the raw as decapitating wives or pulling up a fire pot over wives. In spite of it all women share these displeasure and fear or make play husbands with the family of husband or in which they were born. In ``sexual violence narrative`` husbands rape wives who refuse to sleep together or cordon off jealousy wives or energetic wives in sex affairs. Differently with physical violence sexual violence was becoming more hard in mutual aid or silent approval of surrounding family. We could read the aspects of men`s making men-centric system strong and steady by checking and manage closely women`s body in sexual violence narrative. Lastly in ``verbal violence narrative`` men lay it down that their own wives should to be dead or take a shy at their wives losing chastity. Heroines are tried in the furnace by verbal violence and be patients on the verge of death. However the verbal violence narrative provides shelters for women in the point that father-in-law or mother-in-law support and care for their daughter-in-law. In brief, husbands` violence narrative have rich meaning net such as making observe men violence on women`s body and look for shelters getting out of pains of actuality and steal a glance at the strategy of establishing men-centric idea.
