이 논문은 연암이 열녀에 관해 쓴 다섯 편의 산문을 중심으로 열녀 생산 메커니즘에 대한 연암의 인식을 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다. 먼저 열녀의 생산 조건에 대한 연암의 인식을 살펴볼 것이다. 이를 통해 연암은 연암 당대 열녀가 확대재생산될 수밖에 없는 조건을 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 이루어졌던 지배층의 교화와 이에 봉사하는 담론, 그리고 여성들의 탈주체화된 욕망 실현으로 인식하고 있음을 밝힌다. 다음으로 열녀 생산 메커니즘의 부작용과 그에 대한 연암의 진단을 살펴볼 것이다. 이를 통해 연암 당대 열녀가 확대재생산되고 그 결과 종사하는 여성들이 늘어난 현상에 대해 연암은 매우 부정적이고 비판적인 태도를 견지하고 있음을 밝힌다. 이러한 현상은 연암이 보기에는 본말이전도된 기현상이다. 왜냐하면 여성들의 절행이나 열행이 남편에 대한 의를 지키겠다는 마음의 진성성에서 유발되기보다는 엄격한 사회적 시선과 선험적 규범에 의해 강요된 선택이었기 때문이다.

The purpose of this study was to examine Yeonam`s five writings on virtual women in an effort to shed light on his awareness of the mechanism for producing virtuous women. His perception on in which conditions virtuous women could be produced was analyzed, and it`s found that he believed that the longterm enlightenment by the ruling parties, related discourses and the a-subjectif desires of women themselves made a contribution to producing lots of virtuous women in his contemporary age. And then the side effect of the mechanism for producing virtuous women and Yeonam`s view of it were discussed. There was an increase in the number of contemporary virtuous women, and he took a very dismal and critical view of it. In his perspective, that was a weird phenomenon that the cart was put before the horse, as contemporary women were almost forced by strict social standard and transcendental norms to become virtuous instead of authentically trying to keep their own chastity.
