이 논문은 <옥루몽>의 개과천선 과정 서술에 대한 관심에서 비롯한 것이다. <옥루몽>은 기존 논의에서 그 대중성과 진지성, 놀이 및 유흥문화에 대한 서술, 인간의 욕망에 대한 관용적 태도 등으로 주목 받은바 있으며 현재까지도 활발하게 연구되고 있는 작품이다. 그런데 본고가 조명하고자 하는 황소저의 개과천선 과정 서술에 대해서 집중적으로 논의한 기존 연구는 찾아보기 힘들었다. 황소저는 벽성선과의 처첩갈등을 일으키는 장본인으로서, 작품에서 차지하는 비중이 꽤 큰 인물이며 다른 작품에 비해 그녀가 보여주는 개과천선의 과정 역시 주목할 만하다. 소설에서 개과천선 과정의 형상화에 노력을 기울인다는 것은 인물의 변화 과정을 그리는 것으로, 인물 성격의 변화야말로 소설 작법에서 중요한 부분을 차지하는 것이다. 또한 고전소설에서의 개과천선 과정 서술은 개과천선 모티프가 수용되어 있는 다른 고전소설 작품들과의 비교를 통해 인간의 심성이 환경과 어떤 방식으로 관계 맺기를 하는지에 대한작가의 인식의 변화를 살펴볼 수 있는 좋은 자료가 될 것으로 기대된다. 본고는 우선 황소저의 개과천선 과정에 대한 서술 양상을 분석하고 그의미를 살핀 후 동일 모티프가 들어 있는 다른 작품과 비교 검토하고, 또 <옥련몽>의 해당 부분 서술과 <옥루몽>의 서술을 비교 검토하여 <옥루몽> 개과천선 과정 서술의 특징에 대해서도 살폈다. <옥루몽>의 개과천선 과정에 대한 서술은 인간에 대한 작가 남영로의 이해만이 아니라 그가 이 작품에서 진정 진지한 태도로 현실에 대한 대응력을 모색하면서 형상화한 부분이 어딘가에 대해서도 다시 질문하게 한다. 기존 논의에서 많이 언급되었던 양창곡의 정치 담론이나 혹은 유흥 문화의 수용 등은 그 서술이 자세하고 구체적이기는 하나 당대 조선현실에서 실현 가능한 소설적 대안 혹은 해결이라고 간주하기는 어렵다. 이에 비해 개인의 변화를 그리는 개과천선 과정은 실현 가능하다는 점에서 그 진정성에 기반한 진지함을 가늠해 볼 여지가 있다. 본고는 기존논의에서 집중해서 다루지 않았던 황소저의 개과천선 과정을 살펴보고 그를 토대로 <옥루몽>이 제기하는 문제의식에 대한 재고의 자료로 삼고자 한다.

This study resulted from the interest how villain characters` moral transformation is described in Ok-Ru-Mong. This work has attracted lots of attention for its popularity, seriousness, its description on entertainment culture, and its favorable accounts on human desires. So previous studies have usually focussed on these aspects. But the narration on the process of lady whang`s moral change for the better has relatively rarely studied. Lady Whang who as a concubine causes the conflicts with legal wife plays many parts in the action and her change for the better through repentance is notably described in this work. The fact that the writer elaborates the process of a villain character`s moral change shows his interest in characters` development, which is significant in the writing a novel. If we compare this novel`s narration of a villain character`s moral development with those of other classical novels, we may draw a good source to notice the distinctive characteristics among writers of the relationship between human minds and their surrounding environments. For this purpose, this study firstly attempted to analyse the narration of lady Whang`s moral change and interpret its meaning. Secondly, this study compared it with other works which have similar motifs, especially, with Ok-Ryun-Mong. The understanding of meaning of the narration on a villain character`s moral change of this work not only helps us to see the writer, Nam Young-Ro`s understanding of human beings, but also encourages us to think about other parts of this work which might reflect the writer`s serious efforts to confront his times. Although such parts as the political discourse of Yang Chang-Gok or the acceptance of entertainment culture of those times which have much explained in previous studies are narrated in details, it is hard to say those parts are suggested as a possible alternative to the problematic reality of late Chosun dynasty. Instead the moral change of villain characters like lady Whang might apply to the real world of those times. On this ground we can discuss the writer`s serious and sincere interest in his times. The significance of this study`s attempt to analyse lady Whang`s moral change will be found its invitation to reconsider the seriousness and sincerity of Ok-Ru-Mong.
