이 논문은 한국전쟁 이전에 쓰인 문학사를 대상으로 하여 그 안에 기술된 여성문학이 어떻게 쓰였고, 그 의미를 파악하는 데에 목적을 두었다. 여성문학사 기술의 필요성은 늘 제기되어 왔지만, 구체적으로 어떻게 접근해야 하는가에 대한 해답이 구체화된 적은 없다. 이런 상황이라면 차라리 초기 국문학자들의 문학사 안에 담겨진 여성이 어떻게 그려졌는가를 살피는 일에서부터 그 가능성을 타진해 보려고 했다. 초기 국문학자들은 여성문학을 두 가지 양상으로 제시하였다. 그 하나는 객관적 자료를 제시하는 것이고, 다른 하나는 작품에 대해 주관적인해석을 더하는 방식이었다. 전자는 조선조 이전의 문학에, 후자는 조선후기에 집중되었다. 과거의 풍부하고도 위업적인 유산을 객관적으로 제시하는 방식은 그것이 굳이 여성문학이 아니어도 문제될 것이 없다. 조선조 이전의 작품들은 이런 목적 아래 다양하게 제시되었다. 그 가운데서도 해석의 다양한 방법이 드러난다. 허난설헌과 황진이를 두고 김태준은 개인의 자의식에 무게를 둔 반면, 조윤제는 객관적 자료의 가치를 중시하며, 이명선은 개인보다는 집단으로 이들을 이해하였다. 반면 집단으로 향유되던 규방가사나 소설에서는 문학사가들마다 일정한 차이를 두지만, 객관적인 자료 제시보다 문학과 대중의 상관성에 초점을 맞춘다. 그러다보니 여성문학은 자연히 하층문학으로 다루어질 수밖에 없다. 초기 문학사에 기술된 여성문학의 실상이 정말 그러했는가에 대해 비판할 부분도 많다. 근대주의 시각이니 여성을 주변적 존재로 인식했다고 할 수도 있다. 하지만 그것이 여성의 소양을 거부하고자 한 데서 비롯된것이 아니라, 현재적 처지에서 무엇인가를 말해야 했던 문학사가들의 고민으로 읽어낼 수는 없는가 하는 반성도 하게 한다.

This thesis is for the purpose of studying how to understand the "Women +Literature" in Korean Literature and how to treat the description by the meanings during the period from the publication "Josunmunhaksa" by Mr. AnWhak in 1922 to befor Korean War. The scholars of Korean literature wrote two different types of the Women`s Literature presented by a scholar on Korean literature. The one is introduction the real state in a detached way and the other one is edit the special interpretation in to the literature. In the literature before JoSun introduces from the former standpoint but the literature after Josun introduces from the latter standpoint. However, the case of the latter standpoint, it does not fasten on the Women. Merely it fasten on the point of status in the stream of Literature`s "progress". Considering that treating the Women`s Literature as a Commons Literature and then this Commons Literature is the Citizens Literature, it reflects the latter standpoint. We have to consider these aspects are the history of literature description of the situation at that time, but is was not the conspiracy.
