Cinderella-type tales highlight heroines`rites of passage, such as initiation and deaths, more markedly than other ones. Especially, East-Asian tales, including Kongjwi Patjwi (Pigling and Her Proud Sister), a Korean Cinderella version, deeply involve the requirements for heroines to prove their identities as "real brides" through death, metamorphosis, reincarnation and remarriage, i.e. the femininity of heroines, as compared to Indo-Germanic ones. More specifically, female productivity is expressed best in agricultural tales. Equal to the productivity of land in value, the productivity of women was a creative ability itself. When goddesses disappeared, every creature on the earth had to go through winter without bearing any fruit as well as the world of gods. It was not until the return of goddesses to the earth that the world could see new lives grow. On the other hand, agricultural myths also indicate that farming was derived from the dead bodies of gods. According to French anthropologist Gilbert Durand, amputation, whether symbolic or practical, was done for sacrificial rites universally held as a type of agricultural ones. Further, he points out that such ritual was closely related to that of fire. Yet interestingly enough, Patjwis, not Kongjwis, show such bodily amputation and crippling by fire as in the rites of passage. This is because the moon system, i.e. the image of land and women, was transferred to the day system. Now, the divinity of land was changed into strangeness and fear. While "Kongjwi" is yellow, meaning the sun likeCinderella in gorgeous costume, "Patjwi" takes on a dark color of blood, i.e. a color of land and women. This enables to know that the sacrificial rites of the beings meaning land are symbolized by "having feet amputated," "having eyeballs pecked," "being sliced like chopsticks," etc., as seen in "Patjwis" meaning land. Kongjwi and Patjwi are, in essence, one being with dual aspects. Then, Patjwi internalizes the immature figure of Kongjwi who has to be reborn through the passage rite of death. However, the lunar myth was degraded with the advent of the solar age. Also to rationalize the uncomfortable truth that human body should be damaged, the girls devoted to sacrificial rites were degenerated into negative Patjwi who deserved to be killed.
