어떤 ``신랑``이 혼인을 한 첫날밤 자신의 ``신부``가 간부(姦夫)와 정을 통하고 있다고 오해하고 ``신부``를 버려둔 채 신방을 나온다. 오랜 세월이지난 후 신랑은 우연히 첫날밤을 보낸 집 옆을 지나다가 첫날밤 복색과 자세 그대로 신방에 앉아 있는 신부를 발견한다. 신랑이 발견한 순간 신부는 먼지와 재로 내려 앉아 사라져 버린다. 이와 같은 내용으로 구성된 <첫날밤에 소박맞은 신부>는 표면적으로 신부의 비극으로 읽히나 불안과 우울의 주체인 신랑이 사그라지는 신부의 발견을 통해 자기 내면의 결핍과 상실에 직면하게 된다는 점에서 신랑의 비극이기도 하다. 이때 신부는 완전하고 흠결 없는 대상을 갈망하는 신랑의 성적 욕망이 투사된 존재로 남성 주체의 불안과 결핍을 대리표상한다. 남성의 성적 욕망은 영원히 충족 불가능하며 성적 대상으로서 순결하고 완벽한 신부는 애초에 도달할 수 없는 성적 환상에 불과하다. 남성 주체로서 신랑은 성적 욕망의 억압과 이로 인한 죄의식, 남성성과권력 욕망에 대한 집착 등으로 강박적 불안에 시달리는 존재며, ``사그라진 신부``의 표상은 신랑으로 하여금 자기 내면의 결핍과 상실에 직면케한다는 점에서 남성의 불안과 우울을 환기시키는 대상이다. 수십 년의 시간 동안 신방에서 자폐하는 가운데 신부는 오로지 침묵한다. 신부는 단순히 말하지 않는 것이 아니라 미동조차 하지 않은 채 같은 자세로 앉아 ``온몸으로`` 침묵한다. 이 침묵은 첫날밤의 폭력적인 사건이 ``말로 다 할 수 없는 사건``임을 표상한다. 신부는 온몸으로 침묵하면서 언어의 표상 한계를 넘어선 폭력성, 곧 사건의 잉여를 증언한다. 서사의 변화 지향을 통해 드러난 여성 주체의 해석적 지향은 오히려 신부의 상실을 강화하고 여성을 타자화하는 젠더 정치의 기획에 공모하는 방향으로 나아갔으나 이야기 연행과 전승의 장은 새로운 애도의 가능성을 예고한다. 말할 수 없는 폭력적 사건의 기억이 전이되고 상처가 공유됨으로써 신부를 타자화의 전략으로부터 해방시켜 진정한 애도로 나아가는 길이 열리는 것이다.

A bridegroom returned to his home leaving his bride in the bridal room on wedding night because of the trivial misunderstanding that she had made love to another man. After many years he passed by the house with the bridal room that he had spent his wedding night. When he opened the door of the room, he met face to face with his first bride sitting down just as what she had been on wedding night in the room. At that time, she vanished like ash without trace. This study is an analysis and criticism on the story of "the Bride Deserted on Wedding Night". The story has not only been read as a bride`s tragic generally, but can also be read as a bridegroom`s tragic from the point of view that the bridegroom, the subject of anxiety and melancholy was faced with his psychological lack and loss by finding a vanishing bride. The bride as an immaculate sexual object without deficiency represents the anxiety and lack of male subject. The sexual desire of male subject cannot be satisfied with forever, and the immaculate bride is object the male never hold his hand. The bridegroom as the male subject suffers a lot from the obsession by the sense of guilt that the depression of sexual desire is to cause. The image of ``vanishing bride`` makes the bridegroom to be faced with his internal lack and loss. It stirs up the male`s anxiety and melancholy. For a long time the bride has been silent. She has not only spoken, but also has kept still. This silence presents that the event the bridegroom had deserted the bride on the wedding night is beyond description. The image of ``vanishing bride`` represents an indescribability and an unutterableness of the event. The performance of narrative means the transference of memory and sharing of the experience. So the performance is to open the new way of mourning for the bride.
