본고는 고통의 의미를 레비나스의 논의를 중심으로 고찰하고 있다. 이를 위해 먼저 고통의 경험이 어떤 특징을 지니는지를 고독성, 수동성, 부정성 등을 중심으로 살펴보고 고통이 그 자체의 현상으로서는 쓸모없고 의미없음을 밝힌다. 이어 고통의 원인이나 고통이 봉사하는 어떤 목적에서 의미를 찾는 몇가지 관점을 다룬다. 고통을 신체적 위험에 대한 경고 체계, 죄에 대한 벌, 영혼의 성숙을 위한 시련, 더 큰 선을 위한 수단 등으로 보는 관점들인데, 이러한 의미부여의 설득력과 한계를 밝힌다. 다음에 고통을 보는 레비나스의 관점을 다룬다. 레비나스는 현상에 있어서의 고통의 무의미성을 인정하되, 과거의 원인이나 미래의 목적에서 의미를 찾을 것이 아니라 고통을 ``인간 상호간의 윤리적 전망``에서 볼 것을 요구한다. 이때 타자 안의 고통은 쓸모없지만 타자의 고통을 위한 내 안의 고통은 의미있는 것이 된다. 레비나스는 고통받는 타자를 ``얼굴``이라 부르며 이 얼굴과 조우하여 그에 대해 책임을 짊으로서 ``나``는 주체로 서게 된다고 한다. 이때 나는 타자를 책임지지만 타자의 책임은 그의 일일 뿐이어서, 나와 타자 사이에는 비대칭적 관계가 성립한다는 것이 레비나스의 시각이다. 끝으로 레비나스 시각의 의의와 문제점을 알아본다. ``타자``의 고통에 주목하는 레비나스의 시각은 고통의 이해에 새로운 지평을 열어주지만, 존재론적 기반 없이는 윤리적 당위에 그친다는 점에 문제가 있다.

The goal of this paper is to consider the meaning of suffering centering around Levinas` arguments. For this purpose we examine the characteristics of suffering experience in its solitude, passivity and negativity and I clarify that suffering in its phenomenality is useless and meaningless. Next I deal with some viewpoints which find the meaning of suffering from past causes or future purposes and clarify the strength and weakness of the viewpoints. And then we consider Levinas` standpoint on the meaning of suffering. He demands to view suffering from the interhuman perspective, that is to view it as meaningful in me and useless in the other. According to Levinas my suffering for the useless suffering of the other becomes meaningful. By the fact that I take the responsibility for the suffering of the other I became the subject. Levinas` viewpoint throw a new light on the meaning of suffering, but the deep ontological identity between the I and the other is required to base his ethical arguments.
