연암은 그의 초기작인 『방경각외전』부터 말년에 쓴 <與人>에 이르기까지 인간의 삶에서 무엇보다도 우정이 소중함을 역설했다. 이러한 연암의 우정론을 깊이있게 이해하는 것은 그의 문학 세계의 핵심에 접근하는 지름길이 될 수 있다. <회성원집 발> 등 우정에 대해 논한 연암의 글들에서 마테오 리치의 『교우론』의 영향을 엿볼 수 있다는 주장이 최근에 제기되었다. 필자는 그와 같은 주장에 동의하면서, <회성원집 발>이 『교우론』을 전거로 삼은 사실을 연암의 『열하피서록』에 의거하여 더욱 분명하게 입증하고, <예덕선생전>이나 <與人>뿐 아니라 <회우록 서> 등에도 『교우론』의 영향이 드러나 있음을 구체적으로 논했다. 그러나 연암의 우정론이 『교우론』의 영향만으로 형성된 것은 아니다. 『방경각외전』 <자서>에서 연암은 우정의 중요성을 강조하고 그 지위를 격상시키고자 한 朱子의 說을 자신의 우정론의 근거로 삼았다. 이처럼 연암은 전통적 사상을 기반으로 해서 서학을 주체적으로 수용하고자 했다. 연암이 ``당세의 벗``을 적극적으로 구하고 신분과 華夷의 차별을 넘어선 우정을 추구한 것은, 『교우론』의 한계를 넘어 사상적 발전을 이룬 결과라고 볼 수 있다.

Park Ji-won(1737~1805) emphasized the value of friendship above all else in life throughout his life from his earliest works to his letters in his old age. Gaining in-depth understanding of Park Jiwon`s view on friendship can be a shortcut to approaching the core of his literature. Recently, some proposals were presented claiming that the influence of On Friendship(交友論) by Matteo Ricci can be found in a number of works by Park Ji-won. The author of this paper concurred with this claim, confirmed that Hoe-seong-won-jip-bal(繪聲園集跋) by Park Ji-won used On Friendship as a reference while under Yeol-ha-pi-seo-rok(熱河避暑錄), and revealed the influence of On Friendship on Hoe-woo-rok-seo(會友錄序)as well. However, Park Ji-won`s view on friendship was not solely influenced On Friendship. As the foundation for his view on friendship, Park used the theories of Zhu Xi(朱熹), which aimed to emphasize the importance of friendship and elevate its significance. In this manner, Park Ji-won independently embraced Western Learning with traditional ideology as a basis.
