이 논문에서는 청소년 소설에 나타난 통과제의 형식의 특징과 그것의 문학교육적 의미를 살펴보았다. 청소년소설은 성인(청년) 성장소설과는 달리 통과제의의 과정을 보다 분명하게 드러낸다. 그 이유는 성인소설의 경우 성장의 과정이 현실에 대응하는 과정과 동시적으로 나타나며, 현실의 공간은 통과제의적 성장을 어렵게 만드는 요인이 되기 때문이다. 반면에 청소년은 현실에 대응하는 문제가 유보되어 있기 때문에 미래의 주체로 나서기 위한 통과제의의 과정이 비교적 명확하게 나타난다. 통과제의는 흔히 분리－전이－귀환의 과정으로 설명된다. 그러나 그런 설명에 잘 들어맞는 것은 원시적 통과의례일 뿐이다. 청소년 소설은 비교적 통과제의 형식이 분명하지만 원시적 통과의례와 일치하는 것은 아니다. 그것은 원시시대와 현대는 삶이 지향하는 가치가 서로 다르기 때문이다. 원시적 통과제의는 공동체를 감싸고 있는 종교적 진리의 획득을 목표로 했으며, 그 시대에는 그런 영적 진리의 획득이 어른이 되는 길이었다. 그러나 청소년 소설에서 주인공이 얻는 것은 일상에서는 볼 수 없는 자연을 닮은 화해의 힘이나 윤리적 가치 같은 것이다. 이런 가치들은 어른들의 세계에서는 찾아보기 어렵게 되었으므로 환상 공간 등의 일상과 분리된 영역을 필요로 한다. 예컨대 청소년은 낯선 환상공간에서 ‘어른들은 잃어버린 진실’을 얻으면서 어른이 되는데, 이 과정에서의 특징 역시 원시적 입사의례와 청소년 환상소설의 차이이다. 우리는 그런 차이에 유념하면서 청소년 소설 중 통과제의 과정이 가장 분명히 나타나는 환상소설들을 살펴보았다. 우리는 『마리 이야기』 『리버보이』 『꽃피는 고래』 『싱커』 등을 통해 분리-전이-귀환의 통과제의 과정의 특징을 살펴보았다. 그것을 토대로 한 청소년소설의 미학적, 교육적 의미는 다음의 두 가지이다. 하나는 청소년 소설은 어른들은 잃어버린 아름다운 자연의 가치나 윤리적 가치를 끊임없이 성인의 세계에 이입시킨다는 점이다. 다른 하나는 삶이 세속화된 대가로 현실세계에서는 충분하게 경험하기 어렵게 된 통과제의를 위해 경험의 세계를 확장시켜준다는 점이다. 청소년소설은 통과제의를 돕기 위해 필요한 창조적인 교육의 공간이며 그 점에서 단순히 현실을 재현하는 소설들과 구분되다.

This thesis examined Mari Story(Lee Sung-Kang), Flower of Whale(Kim Hyung-Kyung), and Syncher(Bae Mi-Joo) to consider the characteristic of initiation in fantasy for adolescence. Initiation is represented in the process of departure, separation and return. But it`s meaning is different with the progress of civilization. Initiation meaned the process to arrive at adulthood in primitive age. But it`s meaning is complex in modern times. Mari Story, Flower of Whale and Syncher are initiation nove for adolescence. They reveals the process of initiation more obviously than the initiation nove for young man. But it`s process is different from the initiation in primitive age, because the meaning of initiation is complex in modern times. Initiation in fantasy for adolescence reveals the process of it obviously, because the form of fantasy presents the process of initiation. But the spiritual inner life in primitive age is transferred to ethic in modern times. Thus, initiation in fantasy for adolescence is the process of discovering of ethical value. This thesis revealed that process of discovering of ethical value by examining Mari Story, Flower of Whale and Syncher. And I proved the relation between fantasy for adolescence and literary education in that respect.
