수사학적 문법은 규범적인 규칙이나 오류 교정이 아닌 글쓰기에 유용한 수사학적 선택에 대한 설명을 제공한다(Kolln 1996, Kolln & Gray 2010). 수사학적인 관점에서 보면, 문법에 대한 이해가 글을 쓸 때 중요한 도구가 될 수 있다. 그러나 수사학적 관점이 맥락 지향적이어야 함에도 불구하고 Kolln(1996) and Kolln & Gray(2010)에서 체계 기능 문법이나 인지문법 등에 대한 언급은 보이지 않는다. 과연 어떤 언어학 이론이 수사학적 문법의 체계에 적합한 토대 역할을 할 수 있을까? 이 글에서는 인지언어학(혹은 인지문법)이나 인지과학의 근본적인 가정들이 수사학적 문법의 관점에 부응하며, 수사학적 문법의 목적에 도달하게 해줄 더 체계적인 틀을 제공해준다는 것을 논의했다. 인지언어학은 크기에 상관없이 모든 구문의 형태가 의미와 짝지어져 있다는 것을 설명해주기 때문에, 수사학적 문법의 이론적 토대로 적합하게 사용될 뿐만 아니라, 글쓰기 과정에서 문법적 선택이 어떤 효과를 발생시키는지를 예측할 수 있게 해준다. 이 연구에서는 인지언어학이나 그 인접 분야에서 얻어진 이해가 수사학적 선택을 더 체계적으로 하는 데 적용될 수 있는 몇 가지 상황들을 하나씩 논의한다.

A rhetorical view of grammar is that understanding grammar is an important tool for the writer. With her rhetorical focus, Kolln is predisposed to favour a ``top-down``, context oriented grammar. However, reference to Systematic Functional Grammar or Cognitive Grammar is notably absent from Kolln(1996) and Kolln & Gray(2010). In this article, it is argued that fundamental hypotheses of Cognitive Linguistics(or Cognitive Grammar) accord with the view of Rhetorical Grammar, and provide us with systematic frame in which the purpose of Rhetorical Grammar can be accomplished more adequately. Cognitive Linguistics can be properly used as a theoretical foundation for rhetorical grammar, expecting or explaining the effects of any chosen grammatical unit in writing process, for Cognitive Linguistics reveals that all constructions (from schematic syntactic constructions to substantive lexical items) are pairings of a syntactic and morphological form with a meaning. This paper discusses several situations where rhetorical choices can be made more systematically by turning to the insights from Cognitive Linguistics and its related approaches to language.
