1990년대 이후로 자본주의 경제의 글로벌화 물결이 밀어닥치면서 인천의 정체성을 탐색하려는 수많은 연구들이 인천학이라는 이름으로 축적되어 왔다. 그러나 인천의 고유하고 고정된 정체성을 발견하려는 기존의 노력들은 여기(우리)와 저기(그들)를 이분법적으로 경계 짓고, 여기(우리) 내에서의 질서를 갖추고자 하는, 그리고 더 나아가 여기(우리)에 우월한 가치를 부여하고 확인하려 드는 식민주의적, 구조주의적 세계관에 기반하여 이루어졌음을 본 연구는 비판적으로 지적하고 있다. 개항기와 일제 강점기 외세의 진입구로서 시작된 근대도시 인천은 태생적으로 점이적이고 혼종적인 성격을 안고 있는 도시였다. 이후 인천은 한국전쟁기를 거치면서 대립된 이데올로기의 경계, 산업화의 최첨단에 위치한 경계, 글로벌 시대 자본과 노동력 이동의 경계 등에 위치하여 늘 소통과 단절, 그리고 갈등과 조화가 반복되는 독특한 위치성을 지녀왔다. 그러나 전통의 이분법적 관점은 경계 상에 놓여있는 것들을 외면하고 무시해 왔으며, 따라서 인천의 ``공식적인`` 기억들이 정화되고 물질화되는 과정 중에서 지워진 기억들과 그 틈새 공간에 대한 관심과 재조명이 요망된다. 식민주의적 이분법에 근거한 중심지향적 사고에서 벗어나 포스트식민주의적 탈경계의 관점에서 구성된 문화지리의 조명과 관련 정책들의 실천이 요망된다.

As globalization of capitalistic economy had flowed into Korea since 1990s, we have seen lots of studies accumulated to investigate on regional identity of the city of Incheon. Such efforts have been based on the world view of colonialism and structuralism which tries to draw boundary between here(we) and there(they), and thus to make an internal order within and furthermore puts higher values on here(us). With the post-colonialistic world view in mind, the existing perspective on the identity fixed and bounded is critically revised in order to reconstruct a new regional identity of Incheon after 1990s. Incheon has originally begun as a modern city embracing the characteristics of transition and hybridity since Japanese and other foreign forces` advance and occupation at the turning period of 20th century. It continues in the subsequent courses of the encounter of right and left ideologies at the Korean War and after, of the harmony and conflict of the Korean migrants getting together in the era of Korean industrialization, and of the increasing mobility of foreign capitals and labors in the era of globalization. The existing dichotomic perspective aiming at offical memories purified and materialized tends to ignore and erase the things of betweenness located on the boundary, which are recovered and reevaluated in this paper.
