토론 대회는 토론 교육에 대한 관심을 불러일으켜 토론 교육의 저변을 확대시켜 줄 뿐 아니라 새로운 토론 교육을 위한 다양한 방법들을 실험할 수 있는 장을 마련해 준다는데 토론 교육에 기여하는 바가 크다. 이에 필자는 토론 교육의 발전 방안을 모색하기 위해 국내·외 토론 대회의 현황을 분석하고 이를 바탕으로 토론 교육 발전 방안을 모색하기로 하였다. 국내 토론 대회의 현황은 주최기관, 참여 대상, 논제, 형식, 선발 과정으로 나누어 전체적인 경향을 살폈으며 국외 토론 대회 현황은 영국과 미국을 중심으로 ``세계 고등학교 토론 대회(World Schools Debating Championships)``, ``세계 개인 토론 연설 대회(World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships)``, ``국제 토론 교육 연합(International Debate Education Association)``, ``전국 토론 연합(National Forensic League)``의 사례를 살피고 시사점을 얻었다. 이를 바탕으로 1) 교사-학생-학회 중심의 토론 연합 구축, 2) 논제의 개발과 관련 교육 자료 축적 3) 새로운 토론 형식의 개발 4) 교육과 연구의 병행을 토론 교육 발전 방안으로 제시하였다.

Debating championships greatly contribute to debate education by not only arousing interest for such education and expanding its base but also providing a stage to test various methods that may lead to new debate education. Accordingly, the current state of domestic and foreign debating championships was analyzed in this study in order to seek ways to develop debate education. For domestic debating championships, the overall trend was examined by studying host organization, participants, debate topics, form, and selection processes, while the study of foreign debating championships mainly involved Britain and the U.S. and gathered implications from case studies on ``World Schools Debating Championships``, ``World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships``, ``International Debate Education Association``, and ``National Forensic League``. Based on the foregoing, the following matters were suggested as ways to develop debate education：1) Construction of debate alliance among faculty-student-society; 2) Accumulation of educational data concerning the development of debate topics; 3) Development of new form of debate; and 4) Combination of education and research.
