David Copperfield and Great Expectations are the representative Bildungsromans of the 19th century England. The growing-up stories of David and Pip portray concretely how youths reach full growth into mature human being. The life view of two Bildungsromans is different from that of Self Help. Though people of Self Help succeeded through endurance and hard work, their life views permeate with success-seeking individualism and materialism. Compared with these, the two Bildungsromans are based on humanism which aspires muture personality and completes self-realization. Especially Pip`s story shows persuasively the process of how a common boy has grown into a mature modern self. However, David`s moral growth is paralleled with becoming of a gentleman, so David lacks consciousness of democratic community. The difference of status consciousness of David and Pip makes David Copperfield and Great Expectations significantly different. David`s story becomes a discourse of status discrimination. The narrator, David, doesn`t show any irony or satire toward young David who was very anxious about being a gentleman. Because of his limited status consciousness, David`s self remains passive and inactive. On the other hand, the narrator of Pip`s story provides repentant discourse on his desire to become a gentleman and on his betrayal of human faith. Pip`s moral expansion accompanies his action. Pip becomes active self that meets faithful human relation through action.
