The Marriages Between Zones Three, Four and Five, Doris Lessing`s second book in the Canopus in Argos series, is a novel of ideas in allegorical mode. By presenting two marriages [one between the queen of a feminist utopia(Zone three) and the king of a patriarchical society(Zone Four); the other between the king of Zone Four and the queen of a primitive and anarchic country (Zone Five)], Lessing represents femininity and masculinity as relative concepts. Further, the author insists that these perceptions should merge, evolving constantly and undergoing dialectical processes, to create an integrated androgynous society. This paper compares Lessing`s feminist views with that of Shulamith Firestone. Firestone insists that we should reintegrate the Male(Technological Mode) and the Female(Aesthetic Mode) to create an androgynous culture. But her female vision is being criticized as it relies on technology to free women from their biology. Lessing displays a more comprehensive and revolutionary, albeit abstract, female vision. Her vision is one not only for women but for mankind and all living things. Ultimately, she creates a cosmic vision. and all living things. Ultimately, she creates a cosmic vision.
