The Grass Is Singing, the first African novel of Doris Lessing, portrays Mary and Dick Turner`s fated life together in a closed conventional white society. This paper focuses on carnivalistic mesalliances between Mary and Moses who is a black servant through Bakhtin`s Carnival theory. The characters in Lessing`s works feature people who are oppressed under the bondage of conventions, prejudices, and regulations in society. She explores various aspects of the human condition, ranging from the conflict in the differences of races and generations, the relationship between man and woman, and the role of the creative artist, even with respect to political problems. However, the prominent theme recurring in her works is disbelief in absolute justice. This characteristic of Lessing`s works may be understood better when it is connected to Bakhtin`s thoughts. The Russian critic, Mikhail Bakhtin shows disbelief in absolutism and belief in the relationship between individuals. Especially Bakhtin`s important theory is a carnival which combines the great with the insignificant, brings black and white together, unifies mistress and servant. Thus this study shows through studying the connection of Lessing`s work and Bakhtin`s carnival theory the development and peace in human beings through human relationships.
