We can find the five kinds of dramatic ironies, according to the intentions of speakers, as a united device of Fate and personality, which are deeply involved in the formation of tragedy in Romeo & Juliet. The first and the second types of Irony are the ones when the characters speak to us without any intentions but becomes true. We can find these dramatic ironies emphasizing the inevitability of divine law and the helplessness of human beings. However the other types of Irony express the personality of speakers, especially the protagonists`` with an intervention of the divine law in their own tragic fate. Even if Romeo & Juliet was considered as the tragedy of Fate, this paper concludes that it is not merely the tragedy of fate but also of character in the perspective of dramatic ironies, which is a kind of the first step into his Great Tragedies.
