본 연구는 1990년 1월 1일부터 2010년 12월 31일까지 국내 9개 종합일간신문에 보도된 지적장애인 관련 신문 보도를 외형적인 보도 경향과 내용적인 보도 경향으로 나누어 살펴보고, 그 결과 지적장애인에 대한 신문보도 경향을 분석하고자 하는데 목적이 있었다. 기사 검색은 한국언론재단에서 구축한 뉴스전문검색사이트(Korea Integrated News Database System: KINDS) 카인즈(www.kinds.or.k)를 통해 검색했으며, 기사검색에서 박약, 정신지체, 지적장애를 검색어로 제목검색을 실시한 후 자료를 수집하였으며, 내용상 지적장애와 상관없이 사용된 기사는 분석대상에서 제외했다. 연구결과 지적장애 관련 기사 횟수와 기사 크기는 해를 더해감에 따라 점차적인 증가를 보이고 있으며, 기사의 논조도 긍정적인 논조가 계속해서 증가하고 있다. 반면 기사 형태가 단순 사건·사고를 나열하는 뉴스에 치우쳐 있으며, 기사 주제 역시 다양한 내용을 다루지 못한 것으로 나타났다. 앞으로 신문사들은 지적장애인 관련 보도를 기사화 함에 있어 다양한 주제에 관심을 갖고 보도하고자 하여야 할 것이다. 이를 위해 기자들이 우선적으로 지적장애에 관심을 갖고 연구하는 노력이 있어야 하며, 나아가 지적장애인 관련 종사자를 포함한 지적장애인 당사자들의 적극적인 노력이 있어야 할 것이다.

This research analyzed articles about intellectual disabilities from January 1st, 1990 to December 31st, 2010 in 9 national newspapers, according to their external and contextual factors. The articles were searched through the Korea Integrated News Database System (KINDS, www.kinds.or.kr) by searching topic using the terms deficiency, mental retardation, and intellectual disabilities; articles which were found to be unrelated to intellectual disabilities were excluded. The research results show that the number and length of articles about intellectual disabilities increased yearly, along with the use of positive tone in the articles. In contrast, the articles were usually written in news format, in which accidents and incidents were simply listed, and the topic of the articles were also not varied. Therefore, in order for the newspapers to better represent intellectual disabilities, newspaper reporters need to have more interest and research about intellectual disabilitie. Also people who work to help people with intellectual disabilities and people with intellectual disabilities themselves must make an active effort to find their voice. Only when the interest of the readers and newspaper companies are combined, will articles with quality content be published.
