이 연구는 초등학교 내 특수학급 교사들이 지적장애학생의 장점에 대하여 어떻게 인식하고 있는가를 알아보는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 20명의 초등특수교사들을 대상으로 반구조화된 질문지를 활용하여 개별 면담을 실시하였다. 연구 문제는 장애학생의 장점에 대한 초등특수교사들의 인식은 어떠한가, 초등특수교사들이 찾아낸 지적장애학생의 장점은 무엇인가, 특수교육 장면에서 장애학생의 장점을 어떻게 활용하는가이다. 이 연구를 통해 얻은 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 초등특수교사들은 장애학생의 장점을 교육의 출발점으로 인식하였고 장점을 파악하여 활용하고 성장시킴으로써 장애학생의 진로를 탐색할 수 있다고 하였다. 한편, 장애학생의 장점보다는 단점에 초점을 두는 인식으로 인해 장애학생의 장점을 발견하는 데에 어렵다는 인식도 나타났다. 둘째, 초등특수교사들이 찾아낸 지적장애학생의 장점으로는 지적장애학생의 순수한 성품과 잘하는 것, 좋아하는 것과 같은 개인내적인 장점이 있었으며, 가족의 관심과 사랑, 교사와 또래의 수용과 같은 개인외적인 장점이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 초등특수교사들은 개별화교육계획과 교과 지도, 생활 지도, 통합교육의 다양한 환경에서 장애학생의 장점을 파악하고 활용하는 것으로 나타났다.
The purpose of this paper is to figure out the perception on the strengths of students with intellectual disability from the special teachers in elementary schools. For this study, individual interview was conducted to 20 elementary school special teachers with the semi-structured questionnaires. The subject of inquires were composed four questions: How do elementary school special teachers perceive the strengths of students with intellectual disability themselves, what are the strengths of the students with intellectual disability that elementary school special teachers recognize, how do they put these strengths to educational use. The results from the survey are as follows. Firstly, Elementary school special teachers recognized their strengths the starting point of education, stating that by understanding and developing their strengths, it is possible to seek the career of students with disability. Contrary to this recognition, there was also another recognition that it was difficult to understand and develop their strengths due to the perception that focuses on their weaknesses. Secondly, the strengths of students with intellectual disability that elementary school special teachers perceived are the internal strengths such as they are pure hearted, they do what they do well, and they do what they like to do, and the external strengths such as the love and care from the family members and the acceptance from teachers and peers. Thirdly, in the aspect of utilizing these strengths, elementary school special teachers understand and develop these strengths from various environments of integrated education, individualized education plan, personal guidance, daily-life guidance.
