秋齋 趙秀三(1762~1849)은 18세기 후반~19세기의 조선 후기 문학사에 있어 큰 위치를 점하고 있는 인물이다. 中人胥吏출신인 까닭에 사회적 제약을 받기는 하였지만 그의 문학적 성과는 매우 탁월하다 하겠다. 詩文을 저작함에 있어 그가 보여준 독특한 取材방식과 인간과 사물에 대한 열린 視覺 등은 그의 작품을 읽는 독자들을 매료시키기에 매우 충분하다. 문인 작가들의 작품이 그들의 행력과 깊은 연관을 맺고 있듯이 추재 또한 그러하다. 6번에 걸친 燕行체험은 그의 삶 곳곳에 상당한 영향을 끼쳤으며, 燕行詩로서 당시의 風光과 감상을 담아내었다. 때문에 추재의 연행시 연구는 그의 문학작품 전반에 걸쳐 가장 선행되어야 하는 작업이라 여겨진다. 이에 본 연구자는 박사논문에서 연행시를 주된 대상으로 삼아 연구를 진행시켰는데 이 과정에서 기존 연구자들이 기본 텍스트로 삼았던 연활자본 『추재집』이 심각한 편간의 오류를 지니고 있음을 발견하게 되었다. 즉, 최근까지 작품의 연대순 배열로 구성되었다고 여겨졌던 연활자본 『추재집』은, 기실 작품의 著作時期를 감안하지 않은 편간이었던 것이며, 이는 추재의 燕行詩들을 분석하는 가운데서 더더욱 확실시 할 수 있었다. 추재의 연행은 모두 6차례에 걸쳐 이루어졌으므로, 연행의 차수에 해당하는 연행시의 순차적 배열이 작품 연구에 있어 가장 중요하다. 본 연구자의 박사논문에서는 주로 추재의 신자료인 『경원총집』과 규장각 필사본 『추재시고』 등을 토대로 하여 『추재집』 편간의 오류를 일부분 지적하고 시정한 바 있다. 하지만 이는 單發性으로 끝나는 것이 아닌, 이후의 지속적인 검토와 대조, 그리고 자료의 수집과 분석이 요구되는 작업이다. 이에, 좀 더 정확하고 근거 있게 접근하기 위해 연활자본 『추재집』과 다른 필사본들을 꼼꼼히 교감하고, 『經원總集』, 『聯牀小諧』와 같은 추재 본인이 편간한 선본들을 활용하여, 『추재집』의 편차를 연대순으로 재조정하는 것이 가장 시급한 사안이라 판단된다. 이번 연구는 이러한 일련의 작업을 진행시키는 과정 속의 중간 보고서라 할 수 있다. 향후, 書誌的 고찰과 관련 연구성과를 토대로 하여 그의 연행의 전모와 특성을 규명하고, 문학세계를 입체적으로 조명하는 것이 궁극의 목표이기도 하다.

Chujae Cho Susam is a great figure in the literary history of the late Choson Dynasty. Even though he was under social restraints as he was a man of Chungin Clerica, he achieved excellent results in literature. His distinctive ways of collecting materials and an open mind to human beings and objects are enough to make the readers fascinated. The works of writers are closely related to their travels and so do Chujae`s ones. As he had traveled to China six times, the travels had a strong influence on his life and he showed the scenery and the feelings in his travel poems in China. That`s why it is regarded as the first step to study them before studying his other works. I mainly studied his travel poems in my doctoral thesis. However I found out some serious errors in the printed version of Collected Works of Chu-jae which was studied by other researchers as a basic text till lately. In other words, the works were not arranged in chronological order and the time of writing was not taken into consideration. I was sure about it while studying his travel poems. Therefore the most important thing is to put his travel poems in the chronological order according to the order of his travels. I already pointed out some errors and corrected them on the basis of his newly found material, 『經원總集』 and the manuscript of kyujanggak(奎章閣), 『秋齋詩稿』 in my doctoral thesis. However this job needs a continuous review and comparison, collection of the materials and the analysis. For the right and well grounded approach to rearrange his works in Collected Works of Chu-jae, which is considered as the most urgent issue, the printed version and other hand-written versions need to be carefully compared and his previous works like 『經원總集』 and 『聯牀小諧』 should be used. This study is an interim report of this process. The ultimate goal is to investigate every aspect of his travels and uncover his literature various ways on the basis of the study of his works and the outcome of the research.
