조선이 청과 국교를 맺은 이후 지속적인 사신의 왕래를 통해 수많은 연행록이 쏟아져 나와 지금까지 알려진 연행록의 종류만도 377편에 이르고, 그 형식도 시, 일기, 일기와 산문의 결합 등 매우 자유롭다. 본고는 이러한 다양한 연행록 속에 담겨진 다양한 내용을 관통하는 심미의식을 두려움, 설레임, 그리고 그리움으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 인간의 내면에 흐르는 미의식은 특정한 무엇으로 명료하게 구분할 수 있는 것은 아니지만 일반적으로 해외여행을 떠나기 전 날 보편적으로 가질 수 있는 감정은 설레임과 떨림, 그리고 약간의 알 수 없는 두려움 등일 것이다. 또한 집을 떠나 즐거운 것도 있지만 가족에 대한 그리움, 음식에 대한 그리움 등의 감정도 아울러 갖게 될 것이다. 연행 역시 이국 여행의 하나로 본다면 그 여행의 기록물에 이와 같은 복잡한 감정이 밑바탕에 자리 잡고 있을 것이라고 생각한다. 연행록에서 이 두려움의 정서는 주로 예정에 없던 돌발 상황 및 미지의 상황에 대한 불확실성에 기인하는 경우가 많으며, 설레임의 감정은 무엇인가 새로운 상황을 맞이하거나 바라던 일이 이루어지게 되었을 때 주로 나타난다. 그리고 그리움의 감정은 고향을 떠나 나그네가 된 입장에서 이국에서의 고향에 대한 그리움과 낯선 세계에서 만난 벗과 이별한 후의 그리움이라 할 수 있다. 연행록에는 이러한 복잡한 마음이 종합적으로 표출되어 있으며 연행록의 저변에 흐르는 심미의식이라 할 수 있을 것이다.
With the establishment of a diplomatic relation between Chosun and Qing, envoys were exchanged continuously between the countries and a large number of records on travels to Yenching were written. Until now 377 pieces of literature have been found and their forms are quite diverse from poetry to diary and the combination of diary and prose. This study examined aesthetic consciousness penetrating through the various contents of records on travels to Yenching, focusing on fear, excitement and yearning. Aesthetic consciousness flowing through the inside of human mind may not be divided into several distinguishable elements, but in general one who is starting a journey will feel excitement as well as some fear. What is more, he, while enjoying the pleasure of travel, will yearn for his family, food at home, etc. Because the travel to Yenching was an overseas trip, records on the travels are believed to express such complicated feelings. In the records on travel to Yenching, the emotion of fear was caused commonly by unplanned and unexpected situations and the uncertainty of things that would happen, and the emotion of excitement was expressed mainly when they were faced with a new situation or when what they had expected had been fulfilled. In addition, the emotion of yearning was felt for their home out of their being a stranger in the foreign land, and also arose when they parted from the friends who they met in the unknown world. Records on travel to Yenching expressed these complicated feelings in diverse ways, and these feelings may be called aesthetic consciousness flowing under the writings.
