이 글은 지석영(池錫永)이 편찬한 『자전석요(字典釋要)』를 체재상의 특징과 한자음, 국문 뜻풀이의 언어적 특징에 주목하여 살핌으로써 이 자전에 대한 종합적 이해를 도모한 것이다. 『자전석요』는 전통적인 자전의 틀에 따라서 편찬된것이나 서체(書體), 규범음·현실음, 한문 자석(字釋) 및 이에 전면적으로 대응하고 다의성이 반영되어 있는 충실한 국문 뜻풀이, 그림을 제시한 것으로 형음의(形音義)에 관한 종합 정보를 제시한 字典이다. 이런 특징에서 가장 주목되는것은 국문 뜻풀이이다. 이 풀이를 통해 우리는 한문 자석에 대응하는 국어 어휘 및 풀이 방식을 볼 수 있는데, 이들은 이전 시기의 대응 어휘 및 풀이 방식을 참고하고 물려받으면서도 참고 대상이 없는 경우는 새롭게 뜻풀이를 함으로써 편찬된 것으로 보인다. 이런 전면적인 국문 뜻풀이의 실시는 국한문 혼용기였던 편찬 당시의 시대적 요청과 관련을 맺고 있는 것으로 파악된다.

The aim of this paper is to study character of Jajeonseokyo, focusing on the format, Sino-Korean, Korean explanation of Chinese description about the meaning of Chinese character. I intended overall comprehension about this book. Jajeonseokyo was published according to traditional Chinese character`s dictionary. But there are considerable difference in that Jajeonseokyo has various information about fonts, prescriptive and real Sino-Korean, meaning of Chinese character, Korean explanation of Chinese description about the meaning of Chinese character and illustration. In these respects it is possible to Jajeonseokyo has overall information about shape, Sino-Korean and meaning. From among these words that used in Korean explanation of Chinese description about the meaning of Chinese character, I could see characters of Korean words and methods of explanations. It seems that these explanations have accomplished by reference to Korean equivalent for Chinese character and methods of explanations. But when reference to Korean equivalent for Chinese character from prior period, new Korean explanations were accomplished. These Korean explanations of Chinese description about the meaning of Chinese character have something to do with the period of using Chinese characters with Korean(Gukhanmuhonyonggi).
