국민당과 민진당의 양자 대결 구도를 보인 대만의 2012년 대선은 마잉주 현 총통의 당선으로 귀결되었다. 민진당 차이잉원 후보는 청렴하고 혁신적인 이미지로 마잉주를 추격했지만 열세를 만회하지 못했다. 대만인들이 마잉주를 선택한 배경은 양안의 ``평화``(92 共識)와 ``공영``(ECFA)을 불가피한 선택으로 인식했기 때문이다. 재임 이후 마잉주 정부는 첫째,중국과의 평화공존, 경협 확대를 지속할 것이다. 둘째, 해기회·해협회, 국민당·공산당의 ``당 대 당`` 접촉을 확대할 것이다. 셋째, 소모적 독립외교보다 ``사실상 주권국가``로서의 입지 강화를 위한 실용외교를 추진할 것이다. 특히 마잉주의 친미적 성향을 바탕으로 대미관계를 최우선적으로 고려하겠지만 미국산 무기의 대량구매, 미국의 대 중국 견제전략 편승 등 중국을 자극하는 정책은 최대한 자제할 것이다.

Taiwanese 2012 presidential election held as a two-way race between ``KMT`` and ``DPP`` ended up Ma Ying-jeou``s victory. The DPP``s Tsai Ing-wen candidate couldn``t overcome her inferiority, even though she had tried to chase Ma Ying-jeou with her upright and innovative images. The background of Taiwanese people``s choice of Ma Ying-jeou is that people considered it inevitable to keep 1992 consensus and ECFA (Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement). Ma Ying-jeou administration will firstly, after its reelection, continue on expanding its peaceful coexistence and economic cooperation with China. Secondly, it will accelerate ``party to party`` contacts between KMT/CPP and nongovernmental negotiation between SEF (Straits Exchange Foundation) / ARATS (The Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits). Thirdly, it will push forward with pragmatic diplomacy to reinforce its position as a ``de facto sovereign state``, instead of exhausting independent diplomacy. Especially, even though, Ma Ying-jeou will consider the relationship with the U.S. as its first priority, he will try to refrain from policies that could irritate China such as a large purchase of the U.S. weapons or going along with the U.S.``s counter China policies.
