본고는 그 동안 우리나라 국어 교과서에 수록된 유관순 열사 관련 제재가 어떠한 의도와 내용으로 수록되었는지, 역사적인 사실(史實)과 잘 부합되는지, 그리고 바람직한 수록 방법은 무엇인지를 살펴본 것이다. 지금까지 유관순 관련 내용이 국어 교과서에 수록된 것은 교수요목기부터 현행 2007 개정 교육과정기까지 모두 8회이다. 제2, 3차 교육과정기에는 보이지 않는다. 주로 초등학교 3, 4학년 교과서에 많이 수록되었다. 유관순 관련 제재가 처음으로 국어 교과서에 수록된 것은 『중등 국어 1』(1948)로, 소설가 박계주가 쓴 전기문 형식의 글이다. 그 후 1953년에 발행된 초등학교 교과서『국어 3-2』에 수록되었다. 2002년의 『읽기 4-1』까지 8차례 수록된 글에서 열사의 출생년월일, 이화학당 유학 경위, 병천 만세 시위 시각과 모여든 군중 수, 형량, 시체 토막설 등에서 사실(史實)과 다른 점이 발견되었다. 2007 개정 교육과정기의 초등학교 국어(5-1) 교과서에 수록된 ``유관순``은 지금까지 교과서에 수록된 것 중 가장 사실에 충실한 내용을 담았다. 교육과학기술부에서 교과서에 수록하기 전에 유관순연구소의 자문을 받아 이것을 모두 반영하였기 때문이다. 다만, 지면의 제약이 있고, 전기 속의 사건들은 작가가 드러내려는 주제와 관련되는 것들로 주로 선택된다 해도, 초등학교에서는 집중적 구성보다는 일대기적 구성이 좋겠다. 곧, 출생과 성장, 이화학당 생활과 서울에서의 만세 운동, 고향에서의 만세 운동, 감옥 생활과 순국 등 4단계를 간략하게라도 소개하면 바람직하겠다. 아울러, 교과서 출간 후에 발견된 문제(기독교의 절대적인 영향, 이화학당의 생활, 고문으로 인한 순국 등)가 보충되면 더욱 충실한 내용의 전기가 될 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the subject materials related with Gwansun Yu which are included in Korean language textbooks, mindful of the following issues: (i) What is the content of the materials and what is the intention of including them in the textbooks? (ii) Does the content tally with accepted historical facts? (iii) What is the desirable way to include them in the textbooks? The content related with Gwansun Yu has been included in Korean language textbooks a total of eight times from the period of the syllabus(Gyosuyomoggi) to the current seventh revised educational curriculum. Mostly it is included in third and fourth year elementary school textbooks, but is absent in the second and third revised educational curricula. The subject materials relating to Gwansun Yu first appeared in『Middle School Korean 1』(1948) in the form of a biography written by the novelist, Gyeju Bak. Later they were included again in an elementary school textbook, 『Korean 3-2』published in 1953. Of the total eight writings appearing in school textbooks including the latest 『Korean Reading 4-1』published in 2002, a lot of incorrect historical facts were found regarding Gwansun Yu such as: her date of birth, detailed story of studying at Ewha School, exact time of the Byeongcheon Manse Movement and the number of protestors involved, her prison term, and the examination of her torso after her murder, and so on. The article ``Gwansun Yu`` which is the most faithful depiction of her life appears in the elementary school textbook, 『Korean 5-1』 as part of the seventh revised educational curriculum. Its accuracy stems from consultation with the Research Institute for Gwansun Yu prior to publication by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. Even though we acknowledge that space is limited and that writers tend to choose biographical topics according to their preference, future textbooks in elementary school should focus on the totality of her life rather than on specific times or events. Thus, it is recommended that future publications include the following four areas of her life: her birth and early childhood, her time attending Ewha School and the Manse Movement in Seoul, the Manse Movement in her hometown, her time spent in prison leading to her patriotic martyrdom. It is also suggested that the recently unearthed facts of the strong Christian influence in her life, life in Ewha School, patriotic martyrdom by torture, and so on warrant inclusion in any future biography.
