국어 교사는 다문화에 대한 바른 인식과 함께 다문화학생의 언어 능력을 향상시킬 수 있는 또 다른 특별한 전문성이 요구된다. 따라서 현직 또는 예비 국어 교사는 기존의 교수 능력 외에 다문화적 교수 능력을 새로이 강화할 필요가 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 먼저 국내 초등교원 양성대학과 사범대학 및 대학원에서의 전공 과정 개설 현황, 대학 및 시도교육청 교육연수원 등의 직무연수 현황을 통해 그 실태를 점검하였다. 이와 함께 국어 교사에게 요구되는 다문화적 교수 역량의 개념과 자질을 밝히고 국어 교사의 다문화적 교수 역량을 강화할 수 있는 프로그램을 제안하였다.

Korea is fast entering a multicultural society. Hence Korean language teachers should learn the knowledge and skill necessary to meet students with culturally diverse background. This study aims to investigate the quality of Korean language teachers for multicultural education and to provide leading perspectives regarding Korean language teacher education. For this Current curricula of pre-service education and professional development programs for multicultural education were analysed and suggest the model of teacher training programs.
