The purpose of this study was to provide the proper strategies for improving availability of local food in school food service. We conducted a survey to investigate the utilization status of local food, and the perception and satisfaction of dieticians. The subjects were 121 dieticians in 7 districts in Korea. Dieticians and nutrition teacher perceived that it is necessary to use the local food in school food service in order to offer safe food materials and to activate the regional economy. And they were satisfied with quality and safety of local food. However, there are many problems, such as high price, lack of diversity, budgetary deficit, and paucity of information, with purchasing local food. Therefore, development of various school lunch menu and proper nutrition education materials is required to improve the activate using local food in school food service. And the central and local government should reflect the opinion of dieticians and provide the financial and institutional support for efficient management of local food system.
