본 연구는 한국 기업들의 해외 자회사를 대상으로 본사의 지원수준이 해외 자회사의 역량에 미치는 영향을 본사의 통제수준과 본-자회사 간 사회적 교류수준의 조절효과를 중심으로 분석하였다. 49개국에 진출한 한국기업(203개사)들의 해외 자회사 설문자료(394개)를 바탕으로 실증분석을 한 결과 본사의 지원수준은 해외 자회사의 역량에 정(+)의 영향을 미친다는 증거가 발견되었다. 그러한 경향은 본사의 통제수준이 높을수록 현저하게 나타났다. 그러나 본사와 자회사 간 사회적 교류수준에 따라서 본사의 지원수준과 자회사 역량 간의 관계가 변화한다는 증거는 발견되지 않았다. 이러한 분석 결과는 한국 다국적기업이 본사의 지원을 통해 해외 자회사의 역량을 강화시키기 위해서는 해외 자회사에 대한 통제를 병행할 필요가 있지만, 해외 자회사에 대한 본사의 지원이 활발하게 이루어지지 않는 경우라면, 높은 수준의 자회사 통제는 자회사 역량에 오히려 부정적인 영향을 줄 수 있다는 것을 시사한다.

This paper examined the effect of headquarters`(HQs) support-level on the foreign subsidiaries` capability of Korean firms. Furthermore, we considered two moderators such as HQs` control-level and social interaction-level between HQs and their foreign subsidiaries on the relationship between HQs` support-level and foreign subsidiary capability. We have found out evidence that HQs` support gives the positive effect on the subsidiaries` capability based on the 394 survey from subsidiaries of 203 Korean firms, who are operating in 49 foreign markets. This result indicates a strongly positive relationship between the HQs` support-level and the foreign subsidiaries` capability once there is more control from HQ. However, social interaction-level between the HQs and the foreign subsidiaries do not have any influence over the relationship between HQ`s support-level and the foreign subsidiaries` capability. Based on the examination above, it could bring out the results below; It is essential for HQ to carry out and balance both of control and support on foreign subsidiaries in order to strengthen subsidiaries` capability. For the case that HQ support on foreign subsidiaries is inactive or passive but high level of the control on foreign subsidiaries, it could definitely cause negative influence or discourage to strengthen subsidiaries` capability.
