China, Korea and Japan are called "Chinese Character Cultural Sphere". So in the study of female poetry in Chosun Dynasty, it is very important to compare with female poetry in China and Japan. Compilations of female poetry in Chosun Dynasty commonly have two categories: ladies from good families(閨秀) and changji(娼妓). But in the Chinese literary criticism tradition, "閨秀" widely indicates "female". This usage has maintained from Song Dynasty to Ming Dynasty. In Qing Dynasty, this usage has changed, after then "娼妓" was excluded from the word "閨秀". Compilations of female poetry in Chosun Dynasty follow the usage after Qing Dynasty. Complete Collections of Female Poetry in Chosun Dynasty contains 39 books. Three of them are selections, and others all according to poets` social status categorize works into "ladies from good families" and "changji". And the works of "ladies form good families" are main, as works of "changji" are only 9 books. So can be said that the mainstream of female literature in Chosun Dynasty was that of "閨秀".
