이 글은 2007 개정 초등학교 국어 교과서 단원 전개 방식에 대한 비판적 논의를 통하여 구현 양상의 타당성을 검토하고, 이를 토대로 새롭게 개발되는 초등학교 국어 교과서에 주는 시사점을 찾는 데 목적을 둔다. 이 연구에서 주목한 두 가지 단원 구성 요소는 ‘이해학습’과 ‘적용학습’이며, 이해학습과 적용학습의 단원 구성은 중·고등학교와 달리 초등학교 국어 교과서에서 나타나는 단원 전개 방식이다. 이해학습과 적용학습의 단원 구성은 제6차 <읽기> 교과서에서 시작되어 2007 개정 국어 교과서에 이르기까지 확대, 심화, 정착되어 왔음에도 이에 대한 구체적 연구는 매우 부족하다. 이에 2007 개정 초등학교 국어 교과서의 이해학습과 적용학습에 대한 비판적 관점의 분석 및 논의가 교과서 자체의 질적 개선 및 교육의 질 개선을 위해 반드시 필요함을 인식하고, 본 논의를 통해 새로운 교과서 개발의 방향을 설정하는 데 도움이 되고자 하였다. 2007 개정 교육과정에 따른 초등학교 4~6학년 <듣기·말하기·쓰기> 교과서와 <읽기> 교과서 12종의 단원 전개 방식을 분석한 결과, 이해학습, 적용학습과 단원 목표와의 관계 양상을 ‘구체, 중복, 확장, 축소, 추가, 삭제, 무관’한 경우로 유형화할 수 있었다. 2007 개정 국어 교과서의 문제점을 진단하고 해결 방안을 모색하고자 한 본 연구의 논의가 한층 발전된 새 국어 교과서의 개발에 도움을 줄 수 있기를 기대한다.

This study is intended to check the validity of the realization aspects through the critical review of the unit development method of elementary school Korean textbook according to the revised curriculum of 2007 and find implications for the elementary school Korean textbook that will be revised on the basis of that. The two key words this study pays attention to are ``the learning for understanding`` and ``the learning for application``, it is a special way in the elementary school Korean textbook different from the middle and high school that the unit is composed of the learning for understanding`` and ``the learning for application``. I analyze unit development method in reading textbooks and listening·speaking·writing textbooks according to the revised curriculum of 2007. The results, analyzed ``the learning for understanding`` and ``the learning for application`` are as follows. The outcome of correlation between ``the learning for understanding``, ``the learning for application`` and unit objectives reaches a conclusion that the aspects of correlation is showed pattern like concreteness, repetition, expansion, reduction, addition, elimination, un-relation. In that cases of units constructed by expanding or reducing and repeating the unit`s objectives, it is analyzed the suitability of ``the learning for understanding`` and ``the learning for application`` is low and it is not considered the hierarchy. The cases of units constructed by eliminating and un-relating also is not appropriate. The case of addition that induce the unit`s objective to accomplish mostly by adding some activities deepened in the last ``the learning for application``, suggest a possible approach to applicate in real life, but it is needed the check the suitability of the unit`s objectives. And The case of concreteness is observed suitable and unsuitable examples for the unit`s objectives together according to whether realization of ``the learning for understanding`` and ``the learning for application`` is suited for expanded their concepts or not.
