「소학(小學)」은 동양의 대표적인 수신서로서 핵심 내용은 남의 말에 응대하는 법, 몸가짐의 절도와 어버이를 사랑하고 어른을 공경하며 스승을 높이고 벗과 친하는 도리를 어린이들에게 가르치기 위한 내용으로 일상생활에서 지켜야 하는 도덕적 덕목들에 초점이 맞추어져 있다. 「소학(小學)」의 교육적 의미로서 첫째, 「소학(小學)」교육에서는 어린 시절의 교육적 체험을 중요시하며 사회의 핵심적 가치를 삶에서 실천하며 살아가는 인간을 형성하기 위해서는 유년기에서부터 생활 속에서 도덕적 가치를 실천해야 한다는 것을 강조하였다. 둘째, 「소학(小學)」에서는 지적·이성적 설득, 논의, 암기보다는 생활 속에서의 체험을 중시한다. 셋째, 「소학(小學)」에서는 책상 앞에서의 교과학습보다는 사람들과의 관계 속에서의 자기 역할 습득을 중요시한다. 넷째, 「소학(小學)」교육의 궁극적 목적은 도덕적 인간, 곧 성숙한 인격 형성이라고 하였다. 「소학(小學)」에서 찾아볼 수 있는 교육적 방법으로는 행동실천 중시, 자기교육, 단계적 학습, 수범학습으로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 「소학(小學)」을 교육현장에 활용하려는 노력은 이뤄지고 있지만, 아직까진 활성화·체계화 되었다고 보기에는 어려운 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 「소학(小學)」을 활용한 초등학교 도덕교육 방안을 내용과 방법의 활용으로 구분하여 제시하였다. 우선, 「소학(小學)」의 내용을 적용하여 역할극 활동을 하거나, 현시대에 맞게 재구성한 「소학(小學)」교재를 활용한 교육이 이루어질 수 있겠다. 다음은 「소학(小學)」의 교육방법을 활용한 교육으로 멘토를 정하고 실천체크리스트 만드는 활동과 이를 생활 속에서 자주, 흥미롭게 접할 수 있도록 하는 스마트폰 어플의 개발사례를 예상하여 보았다. 초등학생들에게 「소학(小學)」이 어려운 한자공부가 아닌, 옛 선조들의 삶의 철학과 미덕이 녹아 들어있는 책이라는 의식을 전제로 하여 다양하고 학생들이 흥미를 가질 수 있는 교육방법들을 부단히 교육현장에 투입한다면 「소학(小學)」은 초등학교 교육현장에서 도덕교육의 훌륭한 소재, 그 이상의 무한한 가치를 지니게 될 것이다.

「Sohak」 is a representative oriental moral training book. It is concentrating on teaching how to answer, behave towards and love parents in a polite way. Also, it teaches to be respectful to elders and teachers, and to get along with friends. It focuses on the moral virtues to keep in daily life. The first educational significance of 「Sohak」 is it`s emphasis on educational experiences of childhood. Secondly, Sohak emphasises experience in life rather than intellectual, rational persuasion, discussion and memorization. Thirdly, 「Sohak」 is emphasis on learning one`s-role in relation rather than desk study. Fourthly, the ultimate purpose of 「Sohak」 is making a moral person. It is mature character formation. Educational methods of 「Sohak」 are practical action, self-education, gradual learning and setting an example. Educational effort for practical application of 「Sohak」 is doing. However, it is not activated and systematized yet. This study suggests separating the application of contents and methods in elementary moral education. First, role-playing activities by applying the contents of 「Sohak」. Also, education with 「Sohak」 was recomposed appropriately for the present age. Second, selecting a mentor and making a practical checklist, contemplating the development example of smartphone applications by applying the educational methods of 「Sohak」, If the application of Sohak is continued with various and interesting educational methods, it will carry infinite value in elementary moral education.
