흔히 50년대 한국현대시의 지형은 전통서정과 모더니즘으로 대별된다. 이 구도 안에서 이성교는 ``전통서정의 축을 담당한다. 특별히 고향인 강원도 지역의 정서를 형상화, 로칼리티를 농후하게 발현하면서 50년대 주요 시인으로서의 입지를 굳힌 것이다. 서정주와 박목월의 맥을이으며 이동주, 박재삼 등과 더불어 50년대 리리시즘의 한 축을 무겁게 담당한 시인임을 한국현대시사의 글들은 여러 곳에서 밝히고 있다. 그럼에도 정작 이성교 시에 대한 본격적인 연구는 미비한 수준에 머물러있다. 이에 본고는 마침 부각되고 있는 장소성(Placeness)에 대한 이론들에 힘입으며 그의 시에 구현된 향토성의 의미를 고찰하였다. 장소성은 단적으로 한 장소가 지니는 의미로서 그 안에 거주하는 인간의 체험을 통해 드러나는 것이라 할 수 있다. 따라서 그 장소만의 고유성을 경험하는 의식을 통해 장소성은 구현된다 하겠다. 개인과 문화의 양쪽에서 장소의 고유성을 앗아가며 의미 깊은 장소를 유래를 알 수 없는 공간과 교환 가능한 환경으로 바꿔버리고 있는현실에 개탄하는 문화지리학자( 에드워드 렐프)의 목소리에 공감하면서 본고는 시적 주체가 그 장소를 경험하는 의식현상과 이를 형상화하는 방법에 주목하였다. 이에 주체의 낙관적 시선과 향토에 대한 승화, 인정과 평안의 세계로의 의식지향을 추출해낼 수 있었다. 한편 이러한 지향들은 향토의 습속과 경관을 여실하게 그려내는 묘사의 박진감에 힘입으며 시적형상화에 높게 이르고 있음을 발견하였다. 이렇게 하여 본고는 개발의 미명하에 국토 전체가 비장소성(Placelessness)으로 물들어 가며 패스트풍토화 되는 현실 속에서 이성교 시가 발현하는 고유한 ``장소성``의 귀중함을 반추할 수 있었다.
Generally speaking, the topography of Korean modern poetry in the 1950`s consists of the traditional lyricism and modernism. Lee, SungKyo took part in the important part of the former, especially focusing on forming and expressing the locality of Kangwon province through its own specific emotions. There are so many evidences in the writings on the history of korean modern poetry, which regard him as one of the backbone of the lyricism of 1950`s with Lee, DongJu and Park, JaeSam, succeeding Seo, JungJu and Park, MolWol. In this article, I try to connect the local color of his poetry with ``Placeness``. Placeness means, in the short run, the meaning of a place, which maybe revealed through the vivid experiences of people living in that place. Therefore we can insist that placeness shows itself through the consciousness experiencing the peculiarities of the place. In this article, I focus on the consciousness and method of realizing it of the poectic subject, through which I am able to reveal the subject`s positive view, sublimation of his native place and inclination for the world of sympathy and peace. These inclinations come to high poetic configuration through vivid descriptive verisimilitude on local habits and scenery. In this view, I am able to find out preciousness of Lee, SungKyo`s poetry expecially in these days when all of this nation is encroached with Placelessness in the name of development.
