고전의 가치는 우리가 당면한 오늘날의 문제를 해결하고 미래를 개척하는 데 도움이 되는 원천적인 힘이 있다는 데 있다. 그런데 고전의 가치와 필요성은 그것을 어떤 관점에서 바라보느냐에 따라 달라진다. 고전을 고정불변의 가치를 담고 있는 ``전범(典範)``으로 보면, 고전에 해당하는 작품들은 이미 특정한 작품으로 결정되어 있다. 인류는 이미 특정된 ``고전``을 새롭게 해석함으로써 현재의 문제를 해결하고 미래를 개척하는 데 도움을 받으면 된다. 이와는 달리 고전이란 시대의 요구에 따라 달라진다고 보는 시각이 있다. 이 경우 해결해야 할 오늘날의 문제가 무엇이며 추구하는 미래가 무엇인가에 다라 고전으로 선택되는 작품들도 달라지게 된다. 교과부 고시(2011년)에서는 우리 사회가 해결해야할 문제와 추구하는 미래적 가치로 다원적 가치에 대한 이해의 폭을 넓히고 타자와의 소통을 증진하며, 나눔을 통한 공동체의 안정과 발전에 두고 있다. 이와 같은 목표의 실현을 위해 불교와 유교문화의 정수를 담고 있으며 공동체의 안정과 관련된 고전시가 작품들을 살펴보았다. 한편 ``고전``이라는 교과목은 ``문학``이나 ``윤리``교과와 차별될 필요가 있다. ``문학`` 과목에서는 문학의 본질 및 문학문화의 전수와 문학창조 능력 배양에 초점을 맞추어야 하고, ``고전``은 작품 안에서 ``현재의 한계를 넘어서고 미래를 개척하는 데 소중한 바탕``이 되는 것들을 찾아내는 데 초점을 맞추어야 할 것이다. ``도덕`` 교과의 목표는 공동체가 요구하는 규범을 익히고, 규범의 중요성을 강하게 인식하며 실천하는 데 있다. 즉 공동체가 지향하는 이데올로기를 체화하는 데 그러나 ``고전`` 교과의 목적은 다양한 ``고전``을 읽고 재해석함으로써 ``현재의 한계(문제)를 넘어서고 미래를 개척``할 수 있는 바탕을 찾아내는 데 있다. 따라서 기존의 이데올로기를 넘어 다양한 이념과 생각들을 객관적으로 비판적으로 비교, 검토할 수 있도록 교과서를 구성할 필요가 있다.

The most important value of the Classic is to solve these day`s problems and to help opening up the future we want. But the value of the Classic is vary according to the point of view. Someone regard the Classic as a ``Eternal Paragon`` and the Classics are already specified. According to this point of view, we have only to find that`s value. The others take the Classic for selected thing according as needed. Judging from this point of view, the Classic is selected by what they meet the needs of the times. Because we have to find what is the question at issue and the image of the future. And we have to select some Classic that meet like these requirements. The most important aim of Korean education is nation`s stability and prosperity. In order to realize this aim, students have to cultivate the power of understanding for the plural value and the power of communication, importance of sharing. Many Korean classical poetry contain like these values. When institute ``Classic`` as a curriculum subject, another important point is drawing a line between ``Classic`` and ``Korean literature`` and ``Ethics``. Classic have to focus on these day`s problems and values of future. And it must point to thinking free from our ethics and ideology.
